Dormancy - What Does it Mean When a Plant Goes Dormant?
By Marie Iannotti, About.com Guide

Dormancy in Northern Hemisphere plants is caused by chemical changes within plant cells. It is stimulated by cooling temperatures and shorter days in late summer and fall. This "binds" water so it cannot freeze and injure plant cells.

Dormancy- The resting or inactive phase of plants or seeds. Dormancy of shoots is usually in response to unfavorable environmental conditions.

Dormancy - Some seeds need to have a certain amount of rest time before they can be germinated. A seed's period of dormancy sometimes also coincides with a stratification process.

Dormancy: The season or period when a plant stops growing, usually in winter.
Double Digging: A method of digging the soil by digging down two spits (the depth of two spade heads) then putting the soil from one row into the next row.

dormancy
The yearly cycle in a plants life when growth slows and the plant rests. Fertilizing should be withheld when a plant is in dormancy.

Dormancy - A period in which plants "go to sleep" or slow down their metabolic processes.

Winter dormancy
VFT requires a 3-4 month dormant period. It should be dusted with a fungicide, wrapped in slightly moist spagnum moss and stored in a plastic bag. Keep it at 45-50F degrees. At this time it may loose all its leaves and die back.

Dormancy is also the best time to repot perennials. Use a sharp trowel or knife to divide the root masses into smaller clumps.

Dormancy or Death
With sparse rainfall, the least of your worries is your lawn. Mother Nature has provided the grass plant with a built-in protection plan - dormancy. The lawn will turn brown as moisture reserves dry up, but it is far from dead.

Summer Dormancy and Watering
Cool season grasses naturally protect themselves by going semi-dormant during long hot and dry spells. They stop growing and turn tan, but generally bound back with returning rains and coolness.

During winter dormancy, and exposed to freezing temperatures below zero as well as snow, plant metabolism comes to a virtual standstill.

DORMANT PERIOD (DORMANCY) -- The time when a plant has naturally stopped growing and the leaves have fallen or the top growth has died down. The dormant period is usually, but not always, in winter. Compare resting period.

When the period of dormancy has passed, return the bulb to a sunny area or place it under plant-growing lights. Replace the soil, water the plant, and get ready for a new cycle of bloom.

3. Managing Winter Dormancy
Cannas are especially easy to overwinter. Just dig up the tubers and store them in pots with soil.

Many perennials, trees, and shrubs must have a dormancy or chill period if they are to flower and fruit the following season, and cannot be moved into the house.

Many perennials are emerging from their winter dormancy as well. Summer perennials should not be making a huge appearance now, but daylilies are greening up, hellebores are really growing and beginning to bloom, and columbine, ...

Their experiments reveal that once an impatiens seed gets enough light to break dormancy, continued exposure to light actually stunts root growth and inhibits emergence.

Woody plants naturally enter a period of dormancy or "winter rest." This process is key to woody plant survival in cold climates. Dormancy develops gradually within buds as the days become shorter in late summer.

Plant climbing roses in spring, just as they are emerging from dormancy. Dig a planting hole 18 in (45.7 cm)
wide and deep and mix in a 3 in (7.6 cm) deep layer of compost or other organic matter.

Every year at this time I'm convinced that my crepe myrtles are never going to break dormancy, then they put on a fantastic show. We have a row of all the available colors planted along our front yard fence.

Day-neutral strawberries will continue to set and ripen fruit all summer long until a hard frost puts them into dormancy. Day-neutral refers to the light sensitivity of the variety.

Bamboos that are temperate, which is to say that they are indigenous to a climate that involves a cold dormancy period, are not the best option for indoor growth.

The seed coat or outside of a seed protects it during dormancy. Hidden inside that coat is the radicle or beginning of a root, the hypocotyl or beginning of a shoot, either one or two seed leaves or cotyledons (the seed's food supply), ...

During this period of dormancy, plants are, in essence, asleep. The dormant time for plants is generally anytime between autumn's initial hard freeze and the point that new growth begins in spring.

The first is after the lawn's return from winter dormancy. The second is during the early fall, when temperatures moderate and droughts and heat waves typically are gone (after August).

Hyacinth bulbs require a dormancy period in order to flower when forced. Place them in a refrigerator for about six weeks before forcing. After the bulbs have been cooled sufficiently, place them into a hyacinth vase.

This stored food nourishes the seed until dormancy is broken. By now you've made your choices of good quality seed, preferably organically grown.

At this time of the year, most ornamentals have entered into dormancy, and can be safely dug and replanted.
The key to transplanting is to dig a large root ball (get as much of the root system as is possible).

high temperature dormancy Lettuce and some other vegetables suffer from high temperature dormancy. What this means is that at temperatures above a certain level (for lettuce this is 77ªF/25ªC), seeds will not germinate.

These plants don't require a period of dormancy. Examples include bay tree, rosemary, French tarragon, phormium, mandevilla, passionflower and jasmine.

As the lawn breaks dormancy, examine it for signs of disease and insects. The faster you identify and correct problems, the less stress on the lawn.

To prepare the tubers for dormancy, gradually reduce watering and stop fertilizing at the end of August. Some gardeners may choose to remove any flower buds that form in September to encourage dormancy and the storing of energy in tuber.

Winter time brings dormancy for perennials and provides a perfect opportunity to divide them.

RESTING PERIOD: The period of dormancy where energy is restored to the plant.
RETICULATE: Marked with a branched network of veins or fibers.
RETAINING WALL: A wall that has been built on a slope to keep the soil from sliding or eroding.

Roses can be weakened during the winter dormancy and become susceptible to disease when the growing season begins.

Fall is the time for hydrangeas to begin preparing for dormancy. Fertilizing at this time may stimulate new growth that will be too tender to withstand the winter. In the South, a late May application and another in July would be about right.
