The first dormant oils were heavy and you couldn't safely use them on actively growing plants or you could damage the foliage.

This type of oil is applied when plants are dormant during February or March on a day when temperatures are above freezing. Because oils act on contact, adequate coverage is essential for good control.

DORMANT PERIOD (DORMANCY) -- The time when a plant has naturally stopped growing and the leaves have fallen or the top growth has died down. The dormant period is usually, but not always, in winter. Compare resting period.

There are actually several reasons why wisteria does not have leaves. Most commonly this can be due to weather.

A dormant shrub won't look the same as a shrub you purchased from your nursery. If fact, it may look like it won't grow at all. The online nursery should provide thorough planting instructions.

Those who live where there is a cold winter you do not need to do anything during the hyacinths dormant period. The bulb, by nature, is a package that has all the food and water the plant needs to get it through the winter.

The late dormant season-just before new growth begins-is the best time for pruning most woody plants. With exceptions, of course.

The first dormant season after planting, our tree looks like this. Select 4 or 5 strong side branches that are evenly distributed around the trunk about 8 in. apart, with the lowest about 18 in. from the ground.

The plants are dormant by midsummer, so they're best planted at the back of a border, where later-blooming flowers can camouflage the dying foliage.

Lettuce seeds go dormant when they are warm and often fail to germinate in summer. To make the seed 'think' it has been through a winter, place the seed in the fridge for a couple of days before planting.

Understanding the dormant period of bulbs and other geophytes is the key to growing them successfully. Unless the climate in your area is similar to the bulb's native environment, you'll have to take extra steps to grow them in your garden.

Decollates will go dormant under certain conditions, such as when temperatures are high with low humidity. Although decollate snails cannot survive long periods of freezing weather, they will dig down into the soil during cold weather for protection.

Fall fertilization of dormant (brown) lawns, especially those that have been dormant (brown) a month or more, will provide little or no benefit this fall (although spring green-up of dormant, still-living bluegrass lawns will be enhanced.).

Larvae that remained dormant and hibernated during the winter in spring turn into adult codling moths. These adults lay their eggs and the larvae that emerge will burrow into apples.

Root cuttings are taken during the dormant period when suitable plants are carefully
lifted. Small pieces of healthy root about 2.5cm (1in) long are removed. They should
not be thicker than a pencil, nor thin and stringy.

So you think that just because it's the dead of winter and your garden is dormant that you can be, too? Think again.

Inoculants contain special cultures of dormant bacteria and fungi. The theory behind using them is that they are supposed to introduce microorganisms, hasten the breakdown of materials in a compost pile and produce a better product.
