Trickle or drip irrigation systems allow slow water penetration into the root zone with minimum surface wetting. Such installations may be worthwhile, particularly if large areas are to be irrigated.
The trick with drip irrigation is precision. The drip must be applied at the base of the plant and must be no more than a tiny trickle. Having the water flowing any faster is most often a waste.
Use a watering can, soaker hoses, drip irrigation, or other water-conserving irrigation techniques that saturate the soil while leaving the foliage dry.

Soaker hoses and drip irrigation do this best. If you use sprinklers, run them in the morning so that the plants dry quickly in the sun. Watering individual plants by hand takes patience to supply enough water to thoroughly soak the soil.
Water in the early morning; plant leaves dry out and this prevents fungal disease.
Use mulch around plants to hold in moisture.
Choose native plants.
Use timers, soaker hoses or drip irrigation to manage water use.
Don't water the sidewalk.
For best use of water, water around established plantings once the soil is dry about 6 inches below the surface. If you don't already have a drip irrigation system set up for your containers, check out the many types available at your garden center.
