Drip Line
The circle that could be drawn on the soil around a tree directly under the tips of its outermost branches is called a drip line. Rain water tends to drip from the tree at this point.
Drip Line - The outer edge of a tree or shrub, the point where water would drip to the ground from the outer leaves of a plant. Often used as a reference point for feeding plants.

DRIP LINE - The imaginary line under the tips of the canopy of a tree.
Drip line - a line around a plant directly under its outermost blanch tips: Roots seldom grow beyond the drip line.

DRUPE: A fleshy fruit, such as a peach, plum, or cherry, usually having a single hard stone that encloses a seed.
DRIP LINE --The area beneath a plant where rain water naturally sheds off. The area Just below the outer leaves and branches. It is the area where the feeder roots are often found in many plants.
Your drip lines are also more likely to be snagged or cut by yard equipment than sprinkler systems unless you bury them.

Assemble the the drip lines: Cut the 1/4" tube with the cutter and push the ends into the connectors to lengthen the lines towards the plants. Make use of 1/8" emitter lines to connect the main lines to the emitters.

What's a Drip Line?
When water falls onto a plant, it drips off the leaves. The circle on the ground made by water dripping off the plant's outermost leaves is called the drip line.
Attach the drip line and the main line together using a T connector.

Before you cap the ends of the drip lines, flush the system with water.
When using drip lines in vegetable gardens, cap the end of each line separately. Rather than plugging them into a collector line as is usually done on a grid layout.

Spreading to the drip line. To keep your plants healthy, concentrate the mulch under the drip line, or overhang, of the plant, but don't pile mulches up around the stems of plants. The younger and more tender the plant, the less mulch it can handle.
An established tree, one that has been planted for three or more years, has roots that extend well beyond the drip line of the tree. In fact, conservatively 60-75% of an established tree's root biomass is outside the dripline.
Don't bury drip lines or emitters. This invites clogging with dirt and debris. Also, rodents often gnaw on buried drip lines and emitters. They can destroy drip lines in very little time! ...
Spread the mixture around the perimeter of the rose bush, at the drip line, and gently scratch it into the soil. Water thoroughly.

Weed the area first, then spread mulch around plants to the drip line or cover the entire garden bed.
Three inches of mulch can be safely used for any woody plant, and up to eight inches can be used for large trees.
Instead, look at the edge of the tree's foliage and picture an imaginary line down to the soil (the drip line). Plan to water there - it's where the fine roots that gather water and nutrients are found.
Around young trees, extend the mulch from near the trunk out at least to the drip line (the ground area below the tree canopy (Figure 3.). Established lawn trees will benefit from a mulched area extending 2'-3' out from the trunk.
Colorado horticulture experts recommend watering underneath the branches within the circle bounded by the drip line. Water to a depth of 12 inches. Trees should receive ten gallons per inch of trunk diameter measured at knee height.
Apply the fertilizer near the trunk, extending your application to a few inches beyond the drip line from the leaves, since roots can extend that far.
The roots of the trees can stretch many feet beyond the drip line of the tree. The plants may grow for a short time, then suddenly die. Tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and eggplant are killed by juglone.
Spread straw, pine needles, shredded leaves, or compost 2 inches deep around the drip line of the plant. Don't let mulch touch the trunk.
Spray periodically with an antidesiccant.
Don't skimp on mulch, renewing it in an area extending to the edge of the tree's drip line yearly so it won't have to compete with weeds and grass for water and nutrients.
Insert the rod into the soil around the drip line of trees and shrubs. Leave the rod in place for several mintues, then move it 12 to 18 inches, until you've completely watered around the tree.

Root pruning-slicing into the soil with a spade at the plant's drip line-is one way to slow growth and is often used to prepare field plants for transplanting.
One system is to bury scraps in holes dug around the drip line of tress or shrubs. An English system, know as pit or trench composting, maintains a three season rotation or soil incorporation and growing.
In hydroponic drip systems, a submersed pump controlled by a timer provides nutrient solution to each plant via a small drip line.

Trees which weren't fed last fall should be deep fed by punching a series of 1-2 inch holes two feet apart around the drip line and filled with an appropriate food. A mulch of well composted manure is also an excellent treat for your tree.
During early spring when the buds are just emerging, work one cup of 10-10-10 water soluble fertilizer around the drip line of the tree. Water soluble fertilizer is easily absorbed by the tree's roots.
Avoid disturbing the root zone (at least to the drip line) of these plants or driving over them with heavy vehicles. Saving existing plants reduces costs and leaves valuable wildlife habitat undisturbed.

Soaker hoses work well for occasional deep watering of established trees. Lay them on flat ground; wrap them around the tree several times--starting a few feet out from the trunk and ending just beyond the drip line.
A very large shrub in the ground will take 2 - 3 cups spread around the drip line of the branches (not next to the trunk). This is a very loose estimate, so please read the directions on the fertilizer before applying it.
