F1, F2, F3, etc.: the F1 generation is the result of crossing two different varieties; a cross of two F1 plants produces F2 seed; and so on.
Phyllosticta dry rot is another fungus common in prickly pear cacti. It attacks the pads and appears as black, circular spots that grow to several inches in diameter. Severe infection may result in the complete decay of the entire plant.

Minimize the chances of disease by planting only healthy slips; avoid black and stem rot by planting resistant cultivars. Reduce the incidence of dry rot, which mummifies stored potatoes, by keeping the fleshy roots at 55° to 60°F.
