Agonis flexuosa nana - Dwarf willow myrtle hedge

'SIKES DWARF' and 'PEEWEE'
Both 'Sikes Dwarf' and 'Pee Wee' work well in smaller gardens.

Dwarf fruit trees result in space-efficient plants that begin bearing fruit quickly, usually two to three years after planting. There are, however, a few disadvantages to growing dwarf trees.

Dwarf types include the Dutch-bred Music Box. The multi-branched, 2 1/2-foot-tall bedding mix bears 4-inch flowers that range in color from yellow to gold, including bicolors.

Dwarf mistletoe that appears in conifers also blooms in the spring. When the seed is mature in the summer it will shoot out from the mistletoe plant for a distance of 20-30 feet and attach itself to another tree since it is sticky in nature.

Dwarf Japanese anemones (A. hupehensis var. japonica) stand only 2-3 ft (0.6-1 m), making them suitable for the front or middle of the border.

Dwarf citrus trees won't necessarily provide any viable fruit, but their blossoms can perfume the air in your backyard for weeks in the springtime. And vines like honeysuckle and jasmine look and smell wonderful growing on lattice and on trellises.

Dwarf size fruit trees (trees that grow approximately 8 to 12 feet tall and about that wide) are attractive wherever an ornamental flowering tree could be used --in a front yard, as well as the side or back.

Dwarf basil (O. b. 'Minimum') is also known as bush or fine green basil. Its compact growth reaches 10-12 inches high. The leaves are small, about 1/2 inch long, and flowers are white.

Dwarf beans mature more quickly than climbing varieties. If planting dwarf beans, you may want to stagger plant your crop over several weeks to extend your harvest period.

Dwarf or baby varieties of beetroot and carrots do well in pots. Mini Gourmet Beetroot that produces golf ball sized beets with a concentrated flavour.

Dwarf plumbago - This plant's foliage turns an eye catching scarlet in the fall and it has lovely blue blossoms.

This dwarf Juniper from Japan is the most popular evergreen in the U.S. When we think of a traditional bonsai and what it should look like, we think of a "Juniper Procumbens Nana." It is very hardy, long-lived, and tolerates many adverse conditions.

Cover dwarf winter-flowering irises with sheets of glass, plastic or cloches if there is prolonged cold or wet weather.

Standard and semi-dwarf trees are best pruned to a central leader, while dwarf trees do well when trained along a fence or trellis.

Annuals: alyssum, dwarf nasturtiums, calendulas, zinnias, and marigolds.
Perennials: coreopsis, purple coneflowers, and all sorts of dianthus, geraniums, and yarrow.
Vegetables: peppers, eggplants, and bulbing fennel.

Recommendation: Dwarf 'Rip Van Winkle' grows 6 to 8 inches tall with double flowers of narrow, twisted petals.

With so many shapes and colors available, it's easy to love these classic beauties.

If you don't have room for full-sized fruit trees, check out the new miniatures and dwarfs now available. Some grow just 4 or 5 feet tall and are perfect for growing in large pots or whiskey barrels.
