Earwig Problem
Earwigs are a major problem in the Barossa Valley. Fay Rosensweig in South Australia uses lengths of old garden hose about 30 cm long. She puts them in bushes and fruit trees and spikes them on branches and twigs.
Earwigs
European earwigs should be considered beneficial as they feed on many plant pests, such as aphids, mites and insect eggs. Earwigs hide during the day and roam to eat at night.
Why are Earwigs in the Garden?
Earwigs like damp, sheltered places, like mulched garden beds or under potted plants. Those conditions, along with a supply of food, will tempt earwigs into your garden.

The pest: Earwigs are reddish brown, narrow insects with pincher-like forceps at the tail end.

Earwigs and slugs are the most common pest problems clematis have. Slugs are the most troublesome. As they will always be with us, it's a matter of control not elimination.
Earwigs, a brown, shiny insect, do not tend to do a great deal of damage but they can threaten the perfection of a prize chrysanthemum or dahlia by nibbling on the buds and leaves. Aphids by contrast can do a lot of damage.

Since earwigs can clear a newly sprouted row in a couple of nights, my partner and I dust seedlings with rotenone powder to help them along their slow and steady way. Thankfully, parsnips are not bothered by any other insects later on.
Potato beetles, Japanese beetles, earwigs, slugs, black spot, mildew and blight are just a few of the garden scourges of late summer. I do what I can to keep up, hand-picking the beetles and trying to ignore the disease problems.
Another bug you might want to watch out for is the earwig, which can slink off cut roses you bring into the house. Insecticidal soap helps here too.

Protect the ripening fruit from birds, earwigs and early wasps. Muslin or rolls of special mesh are useful for protecting trees growing against walls.

Pots sitting directly on the surface of a patio may not drain properly or, at the least, may provide a haven for earwigs, pill bugs, or slugs. This issue can be corrected by careful selection and placement of containers.
