Edging Literally Draws a Line Between Garden and Non-Garden
Here's a very informal border that could easily look messy if it bled right into the lawn.

Edging Knife
An edging tool is similar to a spade in that it looks like a wide, flat blade mounted to a handle. Like a spade, the edging tool is inserted vertically into the ground.

Modern outdoor spaces can be stark and empty when the new walls and paving have been constructed, leaving hard edges of concrete and tiles that need to be softened.

Never one to adhere to tradition, I have started swallowing my grassy yard up with perennials and edibles.
