Edging plants are small, neat, compact plants used at the front of the border, in the same way that shrubs or fences define the back of the border.

 


Calendula make nice edging plants and grow well in containers. If you'd like to use your calendula blossoms in cooking, be sure to grow them organically, either in the vegetable garden, flower border or pots.

Dusty Miller is grown for it's silvery-gray, fern-like foliage. Dusty Miller makes terrific border and edging plants, offering a striking contrast to the colorful flowers and green colors of your lawn and garden.

Milliflora petunias are miniature plants that produce abundant quantities of small flowers an inch and a half in diameter. They make good edging plants and are also attractive when grown with other flowering annuals in containers.

These can be edged with consistent placement of one plant, such as lamb's ear, or groups of edging plants. You can also give the island bed an untamed appearance by allowing it to flow into the lawn to mimic a meadow.
