Erosion can be prevented in most situations. Re-vegetation or stabilization with existing plants often is the answer for slopes with a 25 percent or less incline. Steeper slopes may require more sophisticated erosion control methods.

Some erosion creates large gullies in the ground and is easy to spot by even the casual observer. Other times, erosion can occur very gradually and may not be easy to see.

Erosion
When it rains heavily, topsoil is usually the first layer of soil to move. It is often picked up and washed into gullies, where it is deposited, creating soil "dams.

Erosion control. Some flowering shrubs are effective in controlling erosion.
Separate properties. When you want a little privacy, flowering trees and shrubs can be used as an attractive border between two properties.

Prevent Erosion: (Especially important for fallow gardens, like vegetable gardens during winter.) Mulching unplanted garden beds can be done at any time in the fall.

If erosion is a problem on a slope, no matter how gentle or steep the incline, sod is the better option. Its healthy, heavy root mat will withstand water runoff even before the lawn is fully established.

Because beach erosion is such a prevalent problem, many seaside communities provide homeowners with lists of specially adapted plants recommended for local planting.

The benefits of mulching fabric are well known -- you can keep weeds down, conserve water, and prevent erosion of nutrients.

Mulching for the winter protects plants from drastic temperature changes in the soil, insulating plants against extreme cold, and also prevents soil erosion. Don't mulch too early, though, as it may encourage disease and pests.

Cover Crops usually are grown to prevent soil loss from wind and water erosion. Use fast-growing cover Crops, such as winter wheat or annual rye, on fall-spaded Gardens.

Just make sure there are no erosion issues and that the water is being directed away from your home's foundation.

Steep slopes pose special problems, especially protecting soil from erosion. They may require terracing if you want to create flowerbeds without losing soil. Such slopes might also be good candidates for a tough, spreading, mat-forming groundcover.
