Exposed Root Style
In nature, rain and weather can erode soil from the base of a tree, slowly exposing its roots over the years. Bonsai artists like to exaggerate this effect and show a great deal of root structure.

Cover Exposed Yard Areas. Collect chipped materials from county green waste facilities. Apply to areas of exposed soil in the yard to reduce mud during rain and encourage grass growth.

In exposed locations, evergreen hedges provide more shelter in winter, while deciduous species such as beech and hornbeam are good in that they hold onto their dead leaves until the spring.

In exposed gardens, it is best to sow hardy biennials in trays in a cold frame first so that they make strong plants, able to withstand the wind.

In exposed areas, you can use garden fabric or burlap to hold organic mulches in place. Many professional growers cover container-grown plants and beds of young perennials with an extra-thick garden fabric, such as GardenQuilt.

For exposed locations in the dry Western states, the Rocky Mountain juniper (Juniperus scopulorum) is a small evergreen tree that grows to 25 feet with a rounded to columnar habit.

Pots exposed to full sun will dry out very quickly, so special attention needs to be given to watering. It is better to use larger containers that are more able to withstand the drying effects of sun and wind.

In an exposed location, container plants loose moisture quickly. Some plants will need to be watered daily, especially during hot, dry weather.

Exposed hills and embankments are drier and warmer, while hollows and valleys, even minor ones, collect moisture and retain cold. Rocky areas or rock gardens offer sanctuaries of warmth and shelter for vulnerable, smaller-size plants.

Don't leave the exposed root ball sitting about any longer than necessary. Hot sun and breezes will quickly dry the roots.
Keep them well watered until new growth appears.

Pinyon tip moth: Exposed larvae on bark can be controlled early in the month; larvae tunnel into new terminals in late May.
Southwestern pine tip moth: Egg-laying begins with emergence of new needles.

If the victim was exposed to a highly toxic pesticide and begins to feel ill, immediately take him to the doctor, and be sure to take along the pesticide container and label. Do not induce vomiting unless the label instructs you to do so.

Apply a thin layer of compost around the base of plants each spring, leaving the rhizome (fleshy root) exposed. As flowers fade, cut back the flower stalks to the base of the plant.

Pansies that get exposed to warm weather tend to stretch and get leggy, resulting in weaker plants all winter. Fertilize and deadhead summer bedding plants that are thriving and continue to water, and they should last until a killing frost.

Often there are those areas of your garden that just aren't suitable for lawn or have exposed ledge and rocks making it impossible to plant shrubs.

For those who may not want a large pile of exposed decomposing organic material in their backyard, compost bins and tumblers are the first accessories to be acquired. A simple bin can be constructed from concrete blocks, fencing or wire.

At the corners, the exposed ends should be alternated (log cabin style) for strength and stability.
Concrete blocks and bricks should also be set so that the seams don't line up.

In established plantings where the graft union is not too high above the ground, a wide cone of soil can be mounded around the exposed portion of the rootstock to accomplish the same purpose.

A hilltop may seem to be a wonderful place for a house, but such sites are usually treeless and exposed to direct sun and wind-scarcely ideal conditions for a garden.

Place your bulbs in the soil mix, leaving just the tips exposed. A good rule of thumb is 15 crocuses, 6 tulips, 6 daffodils, or 3 hyacinths per six inch pot. After you've finished planting the bulbs, place the pot in a cool place.

If the garden location is more exposed, consider providing a temporary stake-and-burlap wind barrier or baffle screen. Eggplants dislike heavy clay, preferring sandy loam amended with organic materials such as peat moss, compost and composted manure.

We do not advise fall pruning unless your area is exposed to unusually strong winter winds. Prune back to live wood (except climbers) in early spring to approximately a height of 10-12".

Because most garden tools are exposed to dirt and moisture, this is the first place to start when it comes time for tool maintenance. Cleaning and drying your garden tools will keep them in good working order.

If exposed to sudden intense sunlight, tree bark cells heat up rapidly. Since they are not adapted to very high temperatures, they are easily injured or killed. Sunscald may also occur on cold, clear winter days with sudden, intense sunlight.

Dig out the topsoil to a full spade's depth, and loosen the exposed subsoil with a fork. Then spread a 15 cm (6 in) layer of rubble, broken bricks or similar hardcore, and tread or ram firm.

Digging the soil brings weed seeds to the surface -- they'll sprout wherever there is bare soil when they're exposed to sun and moisture.

If possible avoid direct sunlight and areas exposed to strong winds, which can dry and cool the pile. A half day sun situation is ideal.

Since plugs are really little pieces of sod, they can dry-out and go bad if exposed to heat, sunlight, and high winds. Much like regular sod, try to have your plugs as freshly cut as possible and planted as quickly as possible to avoid these problems.

If you get a big rain and the soil gets washed away your plant will suffer as the roots exposed directly to air will die. Mulch helps prevent the soil from washing away and protecting the plants roots.

In an exposed position, the foliage matures to a tough and shiny dark green, whilst in a sheltered spot or filtered light the long strappy leaves have a soft and velvety light green texture.

Leave the plant exposed and outside of soil, resting on a piece of paper away from direct light or draughts. Dip the exposed roots into some powdered rooting hormone or green sulphur to encourage healing, fresh root growth, and to prevent fungal rot.

Now, glue the front and back pieces to the sides -- be certain the correct sides are exposed outward. Waterproof wood glue works well.

Plants started indoors will not have been exposed to full sun, wind, or widely fluctuating temperatures.

One gallon of water per square yard can evaporate from exposed soil on a hot, sunny summer day. A good layer of mulch helps to reduce the rate of water loss from the soil surface.

Appalachian Highlands- The lands of the Appalachian Mountains extending from central New York south to northeastern Alabama.

Green that forms in potatoes exposed to the sun is caused by the formation of solenoids, which are mildly poisonous. Remove all green areas from potatoes when peeling.
