Cooperative Extension Service - Finding Yours
Gardeners are often told to contact their Cooperative Extension Service when they have gardening questions.

 


Extension Service Excellence. If you are new to gardening or new to arctic conditions, spend some time at your local Cooperative Extension Service.

University Extension Services all around the country are trying to put their publications and meeting notifications on-line as quickly as they can. But it will take a while.

Your county Extension service will help you find a lab to do the testing. They'll also recommend any specific directions about how to collect the best samples.

Your county extension service can tell you how to take a soil sample. (Look for the number in the government pages of your local phone book.) They will also analyze the soil, usually charging a nominal fee.

AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION SERVICE: A county agency that is supported and monitored by the land grant university for each individual state.

Cooperative Extension Services
Your local cooperative extension offers soil testing for a reasonable fee. This involves gathering the appropriate sample and mailing or delivering the sample to the extension office.

Using your county extension service or a testing lab to monitor your soil pH would cost $10 to $35 per soil test. Several submissions would be required over the course of your program.

Consult with regional Cooperative Extension Service personnel to determine the onset of ascospore maturity.

Check with your county Extension Service for varieties adapted to your region. You can save money by digging plants from a friend's patch, but there is always the risk of acquiring diseased plants when you get them secondhand.

Contact your county extension service or a local weather service to determine the average annual amount of precipitation in your area. It's also important to know when your area is typically wet and dry.

Your state Department of Agriculture or county Cooperative Extension Service is usually responsible for testing soil. Often, this is a free service; however, some states do charge a minimal fee to cover cost.

Earth Kind is a special label given to a select group of rose bushes by the Texas A&M/Texas AgriLife Extension Service through their Earth Kind Landscaping program.

Contact your local university extension service for recommendations on plants suitable for xeriscaping in your area.

Your local Cooperative Extension Service office may offer a professional soil testing service. The advantage is low cost and results that are specifically geared to your location.

Soil testing, available through county extension services and many local gardening centers, provides the most efficient determination of soil types. Follow the sample collection instructions carefully for most accurate results.

The Colorado State University Cooperative Extension Service has several fact sheets on proper pruning. They include no. 7.205, "Pruning Evergreens," no. 7.206, "Pruning Techniques for Shrubs," and no. 7.207, "Pruning Deciduous Trees.

Most local Cooperative Extension Services can provide you with a kit for soil testing as well as process the results. If not, you may be able to find a private laboratory in your area. Most kits will provide a bag or box to place the sample in.

(In many areas, the Cooperative Extension Service or a local garden center may perform a soil test for free or a nominal fee.) Then you can make a determination on whether to increase the pH by using lime or decrease the pH by using sulfur.

According to the West Virginia University Extension Service, shallow-rooted crops like lettuce, peppers, herbs and most annuals need a planter at least 6 inches in diameter with an 8-inch soil depth.

Jarvis and published by the University of Minnesota Extension Service, the botanical name for the calla lily is Zantedeschia. The calla lily belongs to the same family as caladium and jack-in-the-pulpit, but they are not as hardy.

Local public gardens and state cooperative extension services are great resources. They will help you identify insects and plant diseases and keep you updated on invasive pests that may be heading toward your area.

A soil test will reveal fertilizer needs and composition of soil. Soil testing is available for a nominal fee through area extension services and some private testing labs. Soil testing for home gardens is recommended every three to five years.

6. Avoid mechanical injury to trunks, especially from lawn mowers and string trimmers.
7. Protection from infection of the leaves can be achieved by applying fungicide.
