Gardening FertileFertilize

cross-fertilizationFertilization by the joining of gametes from different individuals of the same species (cross-pollination), or from different species (hybridization).

Tree and Shrub Fertilization
Far too often, homeowners over-fertilize trees, encouraging rapid, succulent growth. This growth is usually not as winter-hardy as normal growth, and thus more susceptible to winter injury.

Fertilization is really not necessary at planting, but many people add bone meal around the bulbs to aid in root establishment. Fertilization is needed during the growing season to aid in the replenishment of the bulb.

Fertilization
Spring Flowering Bulbs. There are two fertilizer systems available. The first system utilizes a single fall application at planting time of sulfur-coated, slow-release complete (9-9-6) fertilizer (Bulb Booster™).

Fertilization. Fall fertilization enhances the quality of cool-season grasses in Virginia.

Fertilization
One of the fundamental aspects of organic gardening is fertilizer choice. Organic fertilizers start as biodegradable plant or animal material. There are many choices for organic fertilizers.

Fertilization
Just like watering, fertilizing depends on the type of plant. If you have managed to supply your indoor garden with the right amount of light, water and humidity, fertilization may not need much attention.

FERTILIZATION
Blueberries need smaller amounts of nutrients than other fruit crops.

Fertilization & Watering:
1. To avoid late, cold-tender growth in the fall, fertilize in late winter or early spring.
2. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization; also avoid potassium deficiency.
3. Water during dry weather.

Fertilization - the application of nutrients for plant growth. The union of the egg and sperm.
Fertilizer burn - the browning and in extreme cases, killing of plants from exposure to excessive nitrogen.

Fertilization is usually not needed for newly planted trees. Depending on soil and growing conditions, fertilizer may be beneficial at a later time.

Fall fertilization will give the lawn better fall and winter color, earlier spring green-up and strong root development.

Annual fertilization may be helpful in producing more flowers. A spring application of manure or compost is beneficial each year.

Avoid excess fertilization, which stimulates the formation of tender, succulent growth. You can also place the plant in the kitchen sink or a bathtub and hose off the insects.

Foliar feeding
Fertilization of plant through application of a fine mist containing diluted soluble fertilizer, such as fish emulsion or kelp, directly to the leaves.

Proper fertilization is essential in maintaining a healthy lawn. However, over- fertilization can weaken a lawn by causing excessive and succulent top growth.

They provide fertilization over a period of time (usually 2-6 months) after application by slowly releasing its nutrients through a permeable coating around the fertilizer.

Ovary - enlarged, bulbous, basal part of the pistil which bears the ovules (the egg-containing units which, after fertilization, become the seeds) attached either to its central axis or to its inner wall.

The second choice is to do what is called a "late fall fertilization". Here, you apply the fertilizer later in the fall, after the lawn has stopped growing but while it's still green. That's usually very late October through November.

Weather conditions, over or underfertilization, or an insect pest could all be your culprit. Chances are the plants were under stress of some kind.

Shoot blight is most common on young succulent growth therefore, pruning systems and nitrogen fertilization practices that avoid excessive and prolonged shoot growth are important for limiting shoot blight severity.

Benefits by fertilization. To plant rhizomes, dig a shallow hole just below the soil surface. Place rhizomes with the growing tip pointed up and roots pointed down.

Infertile soil will often benefit from even larger proportions of chemical fertilization, but care must be taken not to add too much because of the danger of fertilizer burn.

Unless your soil is very poor, grapes, which are very deeply rooted, don't require much fertilization. Where fertility is low, a soil test will determine whether you should add phosphorus or potassium. For all soils, fertilize lightly the second year.

Without natural pollinators in greenhouses, who does the work of moving pollen from the male to the female flower parts, so fertilization and fruit and seed production can occur?

Maintenance of high tree vigor by fertilization and irrigation is an effective method of reducing damage. This also promotes rapid growth through the first six to eight years, when the tree is most susceptible to injury.

Most perennials do not require heavy fertilization. You can work in a small handful of low-nitrogen fertilizer (5-10-5, for example) in a ring around the plant in early spring, and perhaps again two more times at 6-week intervals.

After digging the area, breaking up any large clumps, add compost and manure for fertilization and rake it into the soil. If you do this in the fall, by spring planting time all you'll need to do is turn the soil.

Excessive fertilization with nitrogen and late-season irrigation should be avoided. Horizontal pruning cuts should be avoided so that water won't accumulate and stand on the cut surfaces.

Blueberries are sensitive to over-fertilization. Spread fertilizer uniformly over the root area beneath and out from the plant.

Fertilization just prior to or during a swift increase in soil moisture may contribute to scape blasting. Sometimes the rupture is complete, and all blooms are lost. At other times the rupture is partial and the daylily will continue to bloom.

Poinsettias also benefit from regular fertilization. Use a complete, water soluble fertilizer at the rate and frequency recommended on the label.

providing soil aeration, fertilization, and nitrogen storage. Compost
buffers pH, releases nutrients, and provides food for microbial life.
Botany Basics Basic botany, simplified.

parthenocarpy. Development of fruit without fertilization and seed.
parthenogenesis. Development of an egg without fertilization.
pathogen. A disease-causing organism.

Fertilizer burn - over-fertilization: First leaf tips bum (turn brown) then leaves curl.
Fixture - electrical fitting used lo hold electric components.

It needs little or no fertilization, and except for new plants, should be watered less often than most flowers. Lavender is fairly drought resistant. The plant can be pruned by one-third in early spring or late fall to keep its shape.

As with other plants in containers, herbs require regular watering and fertilization throughout the growing season.

Apomixis process of producing viable seed without fertilization
Appressed Flattened against the twig; not spreading.
Arborcide a type of herbicide chemical that kills trees.

Though the flowers bear both male and female sexual parts and are therefore hermaphroditic, heliconias usually require a pollinator, either natural or artificial, for fertilization. Once fertilization occurs, seed is set.

Many herbs are attractive to butterflies and bees, and are worth planting in your garden to encourage the fertilization that comes along with these helpful insects. Bees and butterflies especially love clover, hyssop, thyme and sage.

amphimictic. In nematodes: 1. Reproduction in which sperm and eggs come from separate individuals (cross-fertilization). 2. Capable of interbreeding freely and of producing fertile offspring. (18) ...

stigma The tip of the pistil, usually sticky, which receives the pollen for fertilization of the ovule. strigose Rough with straight, short sharp appressed hairs. subgenus The principal subdivision of a genus.

Soil Fertility: Fruit trees, like all plants, require some nutrients to survive. But excessively rich soil or heavy fertilization may encourage branch and leaf growth at the expense of fruit production.

Cross-pollination-The transfer of pollen from the flower of one plant to the flower of another for the purpose of fertilization. This can occur in nature or with human intervention.

This may be accomplished by the use of wind, water, insects, birds, bats, or other means. Pollination is usually followed by fertilization, in which sperm are released from the pollen grain to unite with the egg cell.

Bolting - The early flowering of a plant before it develops its crop. Cabbage, lettuce, radishes, and several other crops are subject to bolting. Often caused by rapid temperature changes, cool temperatures, and over fertilization with hot manures.

In hot climates, dark-colored cultivars should receive some afternoon shade to help them retain their flower color. When planted in the correct location, daylilies will flower for years with little care. They do not require fertilization other than ...

During low light periods from late fall through winter, reduce the fertilizer rate by half. (Some will stop fertilizing their plants during the winter months.) Resume normal fertilization rates in early spring through fall.

Leaving clippings on the lawn after mowing can reduce the need for fertilizer because some of the nutrients in the clippings are recycled back into the soil. See EB0482, Home Lawns, for details on lawn fertilization.
