Fertilizer Ratio (An easier comparison): An easier way to compare the numbers is to break them down to the fertilizer ratio or the amounts of the 3 major nutrients in relation to each other. A 5-10-5 fertilizer has a ratio of 1-2-1.

Most fertilizer bags will help you determine the correct setting for broadcast and drop spreaders. The rate is based on the fertilizer analysis. You will want to put down a certain amount of actual nitrogen.

Guano fertilizer
Guano consists of the excrements of sea-fowl collected during long periods on certain islands in the South Sea. A soil which is deficient in organic matter is made much more productive by the addition of this manure.

Fertilizer Terms
Fertilizer: Any material used to supply one or more of the essential plant nutrient.

Fertilize
In popular usage, fertilize has two definitions. To fertilize a flower is to apply pollen (the male element) to the flower's pistil (the female element) for the purpose of setting seed.

Fertilizers quickly break down to provide specific nutritional needs to plants. Organics need time to be broken down into the simple chemical substances required by plants.

Fertilize Tillandsias with a dilute solution of any houseplant water soluble fertilizer about once a month during the late spring through early fall. During the winter, reduce fertilizer applications to about once every 6 to 8 weeks.

Fertilize with Ross Fertilizer Spikes in the spring. Evenly space them around the plant. Breaking them in half will help distribute the fertilizer more evenly. If you have large groups of shrubs, use Bookcliff Gardens Choice Professional Turf Food.

Fertilizer. Renovate rows after harvest by reducing their width to 12 inches and covering plants with 2 inches of compost. Apply a soluble organic fertilizer, such as a seaweed-fish blend, after renovation. Early spring fertilizer makes berries soft.

Fertilize with a lawn fertilizer when the plants are two inches tall. Be sure to water in the fertilizer if the instructions on the bag say to do so. Water so that an inch of water per week is applied to the new seeding.

Fertilize & Mulch
Fertilize and mulch beds and borders. Spring is also a good time to fertilize fruit trees. If you applied heavy winter mulch for protection from the cold, you will need to clear it away.

Fertilize once a week at 1/4 strength with a 10-10-10 formula.
If you keep it outside, make sure it's either sheltered or secured on windy days so it doesn't fall over and break.

Fertilize during active growth-in spring and summer-every two weeks at half the recommended strength with a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10. Herbs need less frequent feeding; about every six weeks is fine.

Fertilize. Fall is a great time to fertilize turfgrasses--both warm-season varieties, at least while they're still green, and cool-season varieties. The type of fertilizer you choose is extremely important, whether organic or synthetic.
