How do I be careful so my pear trees don't catch the disease fireblight?

Symptoms: Young twigs and branches that die back, starting at tip ends; leaves shrivel and turn brown; twig tips curl, resembling a hook.
Offender: This bacterial disease is common on ornamental pears, crabapples and quinces.

Fireblight A serious bacterial disease that kills members of the rose family.
Fibrous Having long narrow shreds or flakes.
Filimentous Thread-like.

Fireblight is a bacterial disease that affects apple, crabapple, mountain ash and pear trees.
Cherry, peach and other related species are NOT affected by fireblight, a sometime serious disease.

Apple Health. Check with your extension agent to see when and if you need to treat your apple and pear blossoms with organically-approved agricultural streptomycin if fireblight is present in your area. Pears are extremely susceptible.
