A planting bed should always be made large enough to accommodate plants when they reach mature size. A bed also should big enough so you can get inside to do routine maintenance.

While starting a flower bed requires some planning and forethought beforehand, it's not as difficult as one might think to build a flower bed from scratch. There are many types of flower gardens and no two are ever quite the same.

Annual basil, parsley and cilantro are great in window boxes, containers or just about anywhere in the regular flower bed. Low-growing oregano and thyme also make great groundcovers.

Though fennel is edible, I originally thought of the plant for the flower bed because of its outstanding form and foliage. Bronze fennel, the type that first caught my eye, is especially striking with its coppery-colored tips on dill-like foliage.

Flower beds. Most bedding plants are easy to raise from seed, though it would be best to research each type or consult a professional before committing to each seed—some, such as begonias are notoriously difficult.

Flower Bed Shapes and Sizes
Flower bed sizes and shapes are an important consideration when designing a basic garden.

Shaded flower beds and heavily-mulched gardens are ideal habitats for slugs, as they need high humidity and cool temperatures to survive. Slugs cannot survive in direct sunlight for long. Without hiding places during the day, they will quickly die.

Annual flower beds do best with organic mulches that will break down rapidly when tilled into the soil at the end of the season. This adds organic matter to the soil, provides food for earthworms and helps builds a healthier soil structure.

East-facing flower beds backed by masonry walls set up a tough challenge for the perennial flower gardener: What will grow there?

Prepare flower beds. Till soil and remove dead plant material, including winter mulch. Add aged manure or compost to keep beds healthy. Spread a layer of new mulch and divide perennials, if necessary.

Prepare your flower beds with fertilizer at least a few weeks in advance to get the soil in proper shape. Perennials love well-drained soil. Till the soil to about one-foot deep and add organic fertilizer like peat moss to cultivate the soil.

Prepare the flower bed Pull all the weeds from the area. Then, turn the soil over, breaking up clumps of soil and loosening the soil well. If this is a new flower bed, it is a great time to add peat moss, especially if the soil is a hard clay.

For vegetable and flower beds, trickle irrigation is a good way to provide uniform moisture. This watering technique requires a special porous hose set at a low water pressure and volume.

Don't Forget the Flower Beds
You may be imagining a lovely Christmas display right smack in the middle of your lawn, but your flowerbeds can be another great place to infuse with a little holiday cheer.

To grow your own cut flowers, start with a good location for the flower bed. You need good garden soil and a minimum of six hours sunlight. Since you plan to cut these flowers when they reach peak quality, you don't want the bed in public view.

You may also use compost as mulch around flower beds, vegetable gardens, or around trees or shrubs in landscape beds. Apply a 3 inch layer. Be careful not to apply mulch close to the main stem or trunk of the plant.
