'Suffruticosa') and American boxwood (B. sempervirens cv. 'Arborescens') are susceptible to this disease, which is caused by the fungus Phytophthora parasitica. The disease has also been observed in littleleaf boxwood (Buxus microphylla) in Virginia.

The plant of choice for hedging is Buxus sempervirens ‘Suffruticosa' or dwarf English boxwood.

Japanese peonies, often simply termed "peonies" or "tree peonies", and historically known as Paeonia suffruticosa, are lovely perennial flowering plants that are readily available from local and online garden centers and nurseries.

There are two types of peonies grown in the home garden: garden peony (Paeonia hybrids) and tree peony (P. suffruticosa). Tree peonies require much more specialized care and are better suited for the advanced gardener.

Native to India and Polynesia, Ming aralia is an evergreen perennial that makes an excellent indoor tree. The species Polyscias fruticosa in particular is prized for its luxuriant, hanging foliage.
