Garden soil may be improved by adding rotted manure, leaf mold, peat moss, or other organic materials.
The ideal tomato plant should be six to eight inches tall, dark green, with a stocky stem and well-developed root system.

Garden soil usually ranges from pH 4.5 to pH 8.0. Few plants will grow well at more extreme values. Most prefer soil that is between pH 6.5 and 7.0, but ericaceous plants need soil that is ideally below pH 6.0.

Garden soil may be too compacted to use potting plants. Potting soil benefits include improved moisture retention and drainage, nutrient fine-tuning, and providing different requirements in adjacent locations.

Garden soil with a pH level of 7.0 is neutral. Numbers rise according to alkalinity and lower as acidity increases. Fertilizers and amendments correct imbalances to improve the growing environment.
