I have used the grass shears and they work quite well too. I don't really have a lot of need to shear grass, but it's nice to know they're there.

For small patches or single plants, use hedge shears, grass shears, or pruning shears to do the job. Cut the old stems and foliage to within 2-3" of the ground.

For regular lawn maintenance, it's a good idea to have: A) a garden cart; B) grass shears; C) a lawn rake; D) a lawn edger; E) a string trimmer; F) a dethatching rake; and G) a hand-edger.

Grass shears (bottom right) are used to clean up the edges of your lawn and light duty shaping of hedges and dead heading ground cover plants.
