Greensand-A natural source of potassium containing about 7% potash plus 32 trace elements.
Growing season-The period from the last spring freeze until the first freeze in the fall.

GREENSAND - A sediment composed of grains of glauconite mingled with clay or sand used as an organic fertilizer. It contains about twenty-two trace minerals including potash, silica, iron oxide, magnesia, lime, and phosphoric acid.

GROUND COVER: A group of plants usually used to cover bare earth and create a uniform appearance.

Greensand, which is available from most nurseries, will also add potassium to you garden.

Greensand and granite meal are sources of potassium. Granite meal is finely ground granite rock which releases its potassium slowly. Greensand is relatively low in potassium, which is readily dissolved.

If you can get your hands on some kelp meal, greensand, rock phosphate, or bone meal, do so! Since it's the end of the season, your local garden center may even have some broken bags they'll be willing to sell you at a discount.

Add 1 tablespoon powdered phosphate rock and granite dust (greensand or potash) each to each mixture for each pot. This replaces the need to use chemicals or manure tea in potted plants.

POTASSIUM - promotes plant vitality and disease resistance. Sources are Greensand, also known as Glauconite, sulfate of potash, wood ashes, or Sul Po Mag. Deficiencies are indicated by an irregular yellowing of lower leaves, and poor root growth.

Test your soil and build it with organic matters. Then add compost, bone meal or rock phosphate, and greensand to supply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Add lime or sulphur to adjust the soil's pH only if directed by soil-test results.

Mix it thoroughly, breaking up clumps and add a couple of teaspoons of rock dust, dolomite or greensand per tray (optional). If you are a gardener you probably already have a favorite seed starter mix and this will work too.

Leaf tips can look burnt and older leaves become almost black. Reduced fruit or seed production.

Depending on your soil, you may wish to add, in addition to composted manure and an organic slow-release balanced fertilizer, an organic amendment containing trace minerals such as greensand or dried seaweed.
