Growing tray

Gardening Growing seasonGrowth form

Pick up a supply of growing trays and mini-pots at your garden centre. Make sure they're the kind that allow good drainage. Also get some sterilized potting soil - important to prevent seedlings being attacked by soil-borne disease or fungus.

If starting thyme from seed, begin the plants indoors in a shallow growing tray about six to eight weeks before the last frost is expected. Use a well-drained tray and do not pack soil too tightly.

If you don't want to build your own, there are several pre-designed indoor lighting kits that provide the light fixture, bulbs, table and growing trays. Although some assembly is usually required, most come with easy-to-follow instructions.

A submerged pump operated by a timer fills the growing tray with nutrient solution, which drains back down into the reservoir below. The Ebb and Flow system works best with water-retentive growing mediums such as Rockwool or vermiculite.

In its basic form, the ebb-and-flow unit consists of a growing tray and reservoir bucket connected by a tube. The tray is flooded by manually raising the bucket and drained by lowering it.

Water from below daily and from above once every 3 days until the seedlings appear. Place the growing tray or container on a heating pad and keep the temperature of the growing medium at between 80F and 85F.
