Another species of crested irises, Iris japonica (not to be confused with Japanese irises, Iris kaempferi), sports a completely different growth form.
They have distinctive leaf and growth forms. The fruits are acorns, which are highly attractive to wildlife. Several selections do well in our soils and climate. They are a little more expensive to buy, but rarely are they disappointing.
This 'Miami' crape myrtle shows the natural growth form of the cultivar and still has a dense display of flowers.

'Natchez' crape myrtle has such a beautiful trunk, you want to reach out and pet it.
Their growth form can be monopodial, growing from one point upward or sympodial, growing from rhizomes. Not surprisingly the Australian aborigines used these plants for different purposes.
Each division should have at least 3-5 eyes on the crown. New growth forms from each eye, so the more eyes on the division, the larger and healthier the plant will be the next growing season.

The family is so large and widely distributed that it is no surprise that orchids exhibit a remarkable diversity of growth forms and survival strategies.
Burying the vines with an inch or so of soil will allow root growth form the vines, providing stability and additional nutrients for the fruit. The smaller vines should be trimmed to allow larger growth of the squash.
Of those pruned, 30-45% did not reestablish a natural growth form. Removing deadwood, however, is helpful to remove opportunities for pest and disease to attack the tree, and its removal bears no consequence to the root system.
