After all the leaves have fallen, pick an afternoon to clean out your gutters. Don gloves to fish out all the debris from the gutters and then use your garden hose to rinse out downspouts and any remaining gunk.
The gutters and downspouts along the edges of your roof are the water transportation system of your rainwater harvester.

Here's a handy tip to help you clean out the gutters without having to climb onto your roof or a ladder. Create a long spray-wand from PVC pipe (1/2″ works well) with a "U" shape at one end.

The gutters lining our roof were replaced a few weeks toward the end of winter.
Install gutters and a downspout on your roof if you don't have them. Place your barrel just below your downspout and you will have no problem filling more than 40 gallons during periods of rainfall.

Clean your gutters and downspouts to remove fallen leaves and other debris. Plugged gutters can cause serious damage to your home as well as your garden when the winter rain and snow arrives.
Eliminate any standing water opportunities such as gutters, birdbaths, wheelbarrows.
Use larvicides to control immature mosquitoes if standing water cannot be eliminated.
Make sure your screen doors and windows do not have any holes in them.
When setting them up near your downspouts make sure you have some diversion system in place to allow the water to run through your gutters when your barrels or full or divert the water to another rain barrel.
Most people already have gutters and downspouts attached to their roofs to transport rainwater away from the building. Ideally, the gutters should be covered with a leaf screen to keep debris from entering the system.
To grow an early crop, try sowing seeds in a length of old guttering from late September through to mid November. Drill drainage holes at regular intervals along the base.
In my mother's garden, it was on the northeast corner of the house - a spot without much light and worse than that, over-saturation from the rain gutter. For years she couldn't get anything to grow there. Her daffodils died. So did her begonias.
That means cleaning the gutters and downspouts if they are clogged. Make sure there are no rusty or leaky spots where water drips over the eaves and lands next to the foundation.
One of the best ways to make the task less arduous is to tap into the guttering that collects rain from a nearby building.
For extra-early peas, sow an early variety in a length of 1 plastic guttering filled with compost. Sow the seeds and keep in a greenhouse or frame to germinate.
Wind cleans the gutters, which are designed to prevent leaves and other matter from entering the pipes that divert to the water storage tank.
With an extension attachment, you can use these blower/vacuums to remove leaves from roof gutters. Remember, leaves in the gutter are usually damp, so the vacuum needs to have sufficient power to do the job well.
The heat of the air in the inferior rooms, and consequently that of the eggs, would rise to an excessive degree, were the fire in the gutter incessantly kept up.
Never dump any pesticide down the drain or into the gutter, even if you've diluted it. And remember, it's illegal to dispose of liquid pesticides in a solid-waste landfill.
