(Gr. gamete, a wife; phyton, plant) the gamete-forming haploid phase in the alternation of plant generations.gamopetalous search for term- a. (Gr. gamos, marriage; phyllon, a leaf) having the petals united so as to form a tubelike corolla.
Each young ovule within an ovary contains a megasporocyte that undergoes meiosis to produce four haploid megaspores. Three of these usually disintegrate, and one divides mitotically and develops into a female gametophyte, also called and embryo sac.
Males possess one set of chromosomes from the egg only, and are haploid. (The exception to this rule is when a queen is inbred and produces diploid drones - see section on Inbreeding).
Sporophyte - The result of the mitotic division of the haploid spore. It can also form from the union of haploid gametes and later give rise meiotically to haploid spores.
alternation of generations -- Life cycle in which haploid and diploid generations alternate with each other.
anemophily -- Seed plants which are pollinated by wind are said to be anemophilous.
