What Are Hardiness Zones?
Gardeners need a way to compare their garden climates with the climate where a plant is known to grow well. That's why the hardiness zone system was created.

When planning your garden, it is important to know what your climate zone is and choose your plants accordingly. This can mean the difference between success and disaster.

I'm not necessarily saying you should cheat the USDA hardiness zone for most plants. However, every now and then, you may come across a plant that is a little bit hardier by at least one zone than even the experts recognize.

Here is one of the best hardiness zone maps I've ever seen. Put in your zip code. If you want to know your frost dates, click on the link. You might have to move your cursor over your area to get frost dates also.

Hardiness: Hardiness depends on the species or subspecies, though some are hardy to Zone 5. Most withstand a moderate freeze. In marginal areas, grow oregano as an annual or in containers that can overwinter indoors.

No doubt about it, peppers do not like frost. In the spring, frost will stunt or kill the plants. Cold weather can cause the plant to slow down or stunt it. In the Fall, cover the plants, if frost is expected.

Hardiness
Kangaroo Paws are rhizomatous perennials, rather like iris. They were among the first native plants to be experimentally hybridised when plant breeders were looking for superior cultivars.

Hardiness zones only apply to how cold the plants can take it. Here in Texas, we're much more concerned with how HOT the plants can take it, but it's rarely on a label telling you that this plant can or cannot take a certain HEAT zone.

There are varying degrees of hardiness though...a perennial that can survive in zone 2 (way up north) is very hardy whereas on that can only survive a zone 6 (Mid Range...here in NJ we're in zone 6) will not be hardy much farther north.
