Following is a selection of my favorite native herbaceous groundcovers, organized according to light requirements. There are many others I would profile if space allowed, including Carex plantaginea and native Asarum species (wild gingers).

Definition: When a plant is called herbaceous, it means that the stems are soft or succulent and green, as opposed to brown and woody. Generally soft, green, herbaceous growth will die back to the ground in cold, winter climates.

Herbaceous, the opposite of woody, describes a plant with soft (nonwoody) tissues. In the strictest sense, it refers to plants that die to the ground each year and regrow stems the following growing season.

Herbaceous: Usually refers to perennials, these are plants with non-woody stems that die back to the roots at the end of the growing season.
Herbicide: A chemical used to kill weeds.
Honeydew: The sticky secretion from aphids, etc.

Herbaceous plants are those whose green, tender stems and foliage die back to the ground in the winter. Most of your annuals, herbs, and garden perennials fall into this category.

Herbaceous plants: Perennial, non-woody plants that die back to the ground each winter but whose roots live and produce new growth the next spring, such as asparagus, rhubarb, hosta, or peony.

Herbarium A collection of pressed and dry specimens for research purposes.

HERBACEOUS BORDER - Probably more known in ferns with Gertrude Jekyll as she created great colorful perennial boarders in contrast to previous Victorian annuals in their showy and symmetrical beds. Of great interest and diversity.

While it is temptingly attractive, this plant is highly invasive and should only be planted in areas where it is known to not be invasive.

Herbaceous, shallow-rooted plants such as flowering perennials and annuals, turfgrass, and many ground covers are unlikely to damage the lines. Don't be too enthusiastic in tilling the soil when setting them out, however.

Herbaceous perennials should be pruned at the end of flowering, rather than allowing the plants to go to seed. Spring and summer flowering plants will then flower again in autumn.

Perennial: An herbaceous plant that lives for more than two years in the landscape.

retain their stems and grow foliage again in the spring.

Herbaceous, soft-stemmed tropicals such as plectranthus, coleus and geraniums, can be difficult to overwinter. A good option is to take cuttings in the fall and let the "mother" plant die. Root the cuttings in water on a windowsill.

Herbaceous borders often consist of backdrops such as walls, fences, or hedges. These borders provide height and are great for use as screens. Herbaceous borders are also good choices for climbing plants.

Unlike herbaceous plants, woody shrubs and trees can be planted well into winter in areas of the country where the ground is not frozen. Better root development occurs with earlier planting, though.
