Shrubs for Areas With High Shade
Shade-tolerant shrubs that are grown for their flowers are best planted where a little sun can filter through, such as near deciduous trees or a trellis.

 


HIGH SHADE - Always a difficult gauge but generally it is the shade beneath trees that have been "limbed up" or pruned to get some light in.

DAPPLED SHADE: High shade that is created by allowing sun to shine through.
DARK-DEPENDENT SEEDS: Seeds that germinate only in darkness. So, must be covered with soil.

It is fairly easy to grow and does best when it spends the summer outdoors in the same high shade that rhododendrons enjoy. Each spring, the plant sends up new growth from its roots.

Baked potatos and roasted things... Parsley, chives, sage... These are herbs that tolerate partial shade, dappled shade, or high shade. Here, add in ginger, the mints, and, on the border lands, dill.

But grass grows everywhere, right? Wrong. Don't blindly buy into seed mixes that claim high shade tolerance. Grass needs sunlight. Unless you're willing to go overboard in your pursuit of a shady lawn, give it up.
