Horse Manure Compost
Composting horse manure is not any different than traditional composting methods. This process does not require any special tools or structures.

 


Load the horse manure into a wheelbarrow and disperse with a shovel. Toss the manure over the garden area and then work it into the soil with a hoe. You should work to a depth of about three inches. The amount of manure you apply is flexible.

Fresh horse manure should be used with great care because it can burn the roots if dug into the soil. The best way to use it is when it is fully decayed as a compost.

So how about horse manure? Horse manure has mixed reviews from our gardeners. Some say if it is not well rotted and composted you get lots and lots of weeds. Larry uses horse manure in building his compost piles.

Natural fertilizers are made from animal or plant material such as chicken and horse manure, bonemeal, blood fish and bone, seaweed and compost.

Organic fertilizer includes cow and chicken manure, horse manure, mulching, fish emulsion, blood and bone, seaweed, soya bean meal, coffee grounds and crushed egg shells, nitrogen-producing plants such as alfalfa, straw, and kitchen leavings.

Leaf mold and compost are excellent soil amendments, but well-rotted cow or horse manure will also do. Space the seedlings about 12 inches apart.

The fourth layer is horse manure, whose extra nutrients give the pile a kick. (You can also use bagged chicken or steer manure.) Two or three times during the layering process, I throw on a shovelful of finished compost.

Nowadays it is often peat based, rather than the traditional rotted horse manure. It tends to be alkaline because of the chalk used in the mix, but if your soil isn't already alkaline, mushroom compost is not a bad source of organic matter.

Well rotted manure, like horse manure, adds body and nutrients to the soil. It should never be used fresh but should be left for at least three months before use.

Every so often I get dried horse manure from the ranch our kids live on. That really heats things up. We have a camellia that never flowered and looked so sickly I was going to remove it.

Organic Fertilizers
Organic fertilizers come from plants, animals or their waste products. Organic nutrients can include cow, sheep, poultry and horse manure. Bone meal, blood meal, compost and green manures also provide nutrients.

Horses are normally fed the best of grains and their compost is superior to that of say cows that have been grazing on poor straw or hay. In this case horse manure may be three to five times the better choice.
