Humus soil
Soils contain a great amount of matter which results from the decay of vegetables and animals; to a compound of which with earthy material the name of humus is given.

 


Needs rich, humus soil and a monthly heavy feeding when actively growing with soluable 20-20-20 fertilizer. Needs bright light, but protection from hot afternoon sun. Mist leaves often, and sponge them off when dusty.

For plants requiring a humus soil use 1 part loam, 2 parts compost and 1 part coarse, clean sand plus 1 tablespoon of (d.) per 6 inch pot.

'Harrisiana' (Spider Flower) Plant bulbs outdoors in the spring after all chance of frost has passed, 4" deep and 12" apart in well-drained, humus soil in full sun. Remove flower stalk at its base after flowers fade.

Plants can be obtained from a local nursery, grown from seed or from root division (do you have a friend with a few plants to spare?). Plant in a rich humus soil about 45-60 cm (18-24 inches) apart in a garden bed that has been well dug over and ...

Along with adapting to shade, they also adapted to the light, often acid, humus soils of the forest. Most Colorado soils are mineral soils and much more alkaline than those in moist temperate forests.

Since snowdrops may bloom before you're out working in your garden, be sure to plant them near your walk and driveway. They look quite natural in a woodland setting and will grow well in a woodland's rich humus soil.

Acidic Soil: Acidic soils are common in areas high in sandy and/or humus soils and rainfall. Lime is the common amendment added to improve these soils.
