The hybrid tea rose is considered a Modern Rose and came about from a cross of the hybrid perpetual rose and the tea rose. The hybrid tea roses hardiness exceeds that of her parents and thus has become a very popular rose bush indeed.

Hybrid tea roses. These are tall, long-stemmed roses ideal for cutting. They are usually the kind you send from the florist. In the garden, they are often featured as single specimens.

Hybrid teas and floribundas usually grow no more than 2 to 3 feet high. Their form is coarse, and hardly very appealing, but they do have the ability to produce an abundance of flowers throughout the growing season.

Hybrid tea roses are prone to every rose malady, but gardeners forgive these flaws because of the beauty and fragrance of the flowers. Cultivars number in the thousands and include the revered red-flowered 'Mr. Lincoln' and coral red 'Fragrant Cloud'.

Hybrid teas, grandifloras, and floribundas should be pruned in the spring when the buds are swelling, but before new growth has begun. Prune to about one- third to half the height and width each year.

Hybrid teas need the most. They are normally pruned back to a height of 8-18 inches in late February. Prune to a bud that is on the outside of the stem, as that is the point from where the new branch will grow.

Bush roses, which used to be called Hybrid Teas, need different treatment. They need thinning to improve air circulation which means opening up the centre and getting rid of dead wood.

The rose was called La France and it created a class of roses called hybrid tea. The most popular modern rose classes are miniatures, grandiflora, floribunda, and the original hybrid tea.

The only thing they lack on the whole is bloom quality - they often don't have the fragrance or the form of Hybrid Teas, but cultivars can be found that have just as much fragrance, such as 'Fragrant Delight'; likewise some have just as good form, ...

Lincoln' is a desirable hybrid tea rose because of its deep, dark red blooms and lovely fragrance. Another dark red rose is the floribunda type, 'Europeana'. Among white roses, a hybrid tea is 'Honor' and floribunda, 'Iceberg'.

Prune in mid-spring. First remove dead, diseased and dying branches. Prune most by about half, cutting to within 8cm (3in) of the previous year's growth.
