Inbred/inbreeding An undesirable plant made by crossing two related plants.
Indicator plant A sensitive plant that alerts to some condition such as drought.
Inermis Without thorns or less thorny.

 


Inbred - (true breed) offspring of plants of the same breed or ancestry.
Inert - chemically non-reactive; inert growing mediums make it easy to control the chemistry of the nutrient solution, ...

(The exception to this rule is when a queen is inbred and produces diploid drones - see section on Inbreeding).
It is not clear how the queen determines whether an egg will receive sperm as it passes through the vagina.

Read the plant tags on seedling cell packs -- they offer valuable information and may list any inbred resistance to diseases and pests.

Select hybrid seed with inbred resistance to verticillium wilt, which infects the capillary system. Rotate eggplant location in the garden each year, or grow in containers with soilless mix to completely eliminate disease risk.

F1 Hybrids
Seeds bred by crossing two purebred inbred lines, to produce plants of exceptional vigor and uniformity.
Filament
Thread - like stem on which the pollen bearing anther is held. See Anther.

Hybrid-Plant or animal derived from a cross between genetically different parents. F1 hybrids are seeds harvested from the crossing of two pure inbred lines, to produce plants with desirable traits, such as increased vigor, uniformity, ...

An unvarying variety of plant produced by selective hybridization, or, sometimes found in wild populations, and maintained by vegetative propagation or by inbred seed.

By self-pollinating the plant over a number of generations, each time saving the seeds of the best performers and self-pollinating them, the breeders (the Dutch team of Zwaan and Van der Molen) eventually ended up with a pure, inbred line.
