The ant bait that is being used is an insect growth regulator. It does not kill the ants, but only prevents the queen from laying viable eggs, so over time the queen becomes sterile and the ant nest dies out. 97.

It can also be controlled by biorational insecticides such as bacteria (Bacillus thuringiensis), insect growth regulators, viruses, and botanicals, though these materials tend to be less effective than the synthetic chemicals.

In addition to Bti, insect growth regulators such as methoprene interrupt mosquito growth and development, preventing adult emergence. Insect growth regulators do not harm fish or other wildlife but do affect other insects and arthropods.

Margosan-O works as an insect growth regulator. The treated insect usually can't molt to its next lifestage and dies. It also may deter egg laying. Do not expect a quick kill.
