Systemic insecticides are most commonly applied as a soil drench; they are absorbed by the roots of plants and then move ("translocates") to the above-ground parts (leaves, twigs, and branches), where it is toxic to any sucking or chewing insects.

Enough was enough, I lost my patience with these critters making my plants look ragged so I went to Home Depot to purchase an insecticide recommended by the University of Florida Extension Service to control this weevil.

The reality of any kind of gardening is that at some point you WILL encounter pests.

Any material that kills insects. There are numerous botanical and mineral powders that are toxic to insects, as well as biodegradable chemicals such as insecticidal soaps.

When you see a plant covered with insects or fungus, fight the urge to go get out the chemical sprays. Many chemical sprays will themselves trigger allergies. They may also weaken your immune system.

Insecticides can play an important role in integrated fly management programs. Chemical control options include space sprays, baits, larvicides, residual premise sprays, and whole-animal sprays.

Natural insecticides: Most natural insecticides are less toxic than synthetic chemicals. They don't accumulate in the environment or in animal tissues, and most insects don't readily develop resistance to them.

Systemic insecticides work best, "systemic" referring to a product that travels throughout the plant's system. Insects are killed when they feed on the sap. These insecticides are usually sold as granules.

Apply all insecticides locally, to take care of a specific pest problem, instead of blanketing the entire garden. Call your local Extension office for specific recommendations.

Generally, insecticides are not recommended for culinary herbs. Hand picking of the insects is much healthier. Insecticidal soaps can be used.

Other good insecticides include flour, a good dusting will poison chewing caterpillars.
