Bouquet Purple dianthus was developed a couple years back as an interspecific hybrid by the breeders at PanAmerican Seed Company in California.
The plant is an 'interspecific hybrid' (a cross between two species of begonia), so an 'x' is used in its Latin name to indicate its hybrid origins. Some sources use Begonia x hybrida as a catchall name for this plant.
"They are an interspecific hybrid—meaning they are a cross between two different species, which doesn't happen very often. That's what makes this one unique and probably contributes to its crazy hotness.
