Interstem/interstock A piece of stem tissue grafted between a rootstock and a scion. Introduced A plant that is exotic or brought from another region; a plant brought and sold in the nursery trade for the first time.
interstem (1) The portion of a stem between two nodes. (2) The middle piece of a graft combination made up of more than two parts, i.e., the piece between the scion and the root stock.
In apples it is worthwhile to use disease resistant cultivars such as 'Liberty,' 'Prima,' 'Priscilla' or 'Sir Prize'; and avoid rootstocks and interstems designated M9 or M26 (because of their susceptibility to woolly apple aphid and other problems).
Entire trees on highly susceptible rootstocks (Mark, M. 9, M. 26) or interstems can wilt and die if this portion becomes infected (Fig. 6; note sunken, girdling canker on the M. 9 interstem piece).
