Island bed refers to "islands" of flowers which one can walk around. They usually appear in the middle of lawns, and are bordered with stone or brick.

An island bed is a garden that floats in a "sea" of lawn. The shape is irregular, with gentle curves and no sharp corners.

A shady island bed shows just how to arrange plants from smallest to largest so onlookers can enjoy them all from many angles.

An island bed is surrounded by lawn. Position an island bed with an irregular shape that will fit the contours of your lawn and border plantings. Place the tallest plants in the center with all other plant heights scaled down towards the outer edge.

A few years back, however, I decided to put in an island bed. I tilled and then went shopping for something to fill this rather large area with. I found a canister of mixed perennial seeds designed to bloom all season, and WOW, did it ever work.

Those whose pleasing forms lend themselves to higher visibility are tailor-made for the center of an island bed. Pineapple sage, for instance, serves as the centerpiece the kidney-shaped island bed in my front yard.

'Winchester Fanfare' in an island bed one fall day, completely oblivious of a neighboring calla lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica) that was going dormant.

A more modern approach is to use herbaceous plants in an island bed so that you can view them from all sides. Tallest plants are in the middle and island shapes are normally informal to suit the informal drifts of the plants.

Or a square one with semicircular island beds, or one further divided into pie-wedged beds, or even a quartet of rooms.
