Drought tolerance of Kentucky bluegrass
If the average person was asked to give 10 reasons for local water shortages, there is little doubt that "Kentucky bluegrass" would be at or near the top of the list.

Kentucky bluegrass seed is the tortoise of the turf world. It can take two, even three weeks to germinate.

Kentucky Bluegrass is one of the more popular cool season grasses. This kind of bluegrass seed is both inexpensive and costs very little to maintain. It produces a dense, green sod, with smooth stems that are medium to fine in texture.

Kentucky bluegrass. Grass seed mixes in the North will have a high proportion of Kentucky bluegrass. A mix that is identified for sunny areas should have mostly bluegrass, since it does best in sun.

Cool-climate grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryes, bentgrass, and fescues), grow best in northern climates. They get off to an early start in spring and stay green longer into the fall.

That means a high-maintenance spread of Kentucky bluegrass in Palm Springs is as "out" as manzanita trees in Manhattan.

Lawns composed of cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue are best aerified in the fall, when there is less heat stress and danger of invasion by weedy annuals.

The most common cool-season grasses include fine fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue.

When seeding, use a mix of Kentucky bluegrass, fescue and rye. However, use a higher percentage of the drought resistant varieties of turf such as fine fescue, red fescue and hard fescue. Be sure to water your lawn deeply.

Now is the time for spring lawn care. Re-seed bare spots in a sunny lawn with Kentucky Bluegrass. For shady lawns, re-seed with Red Fescue. Fertilize the lawn and compost grass clippings.

Year three: Now's the time to control the cool-season weeds, such as quackgrass and Kentucky bluegrass, that appear in the beds while the prairie plants are still dormant.

Other grasses-- Kentucky bluegrass is consider the best of the lawn grasses in climates a little cooler than where bermuda does best. Fine-textured, it tolerates more shade but does not hold up to foot traffic as well.

Today, the Tea Garden, which is made up of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass, is used for croquet and bocci ball games. It is also the site of a children's carnival, outdoor jazz performances and countless wedding ceremonies.

There are many drought-tolerant native grasses such as Buffalograss, Fairway crested wheatgrass, and Blue gramagrass. Non-native drought resistent grasses include Kentucky Bluegrass, Canada Bluegrass, and Hard Fescue, Tall Fescue, and Red Fescue.

Common plants with allelopathic properties can be seen in laurel, bearberry, sumac, rhododendrons, elderberry, forsythia, goldenrod aster, some types of fern, foxtail, perennial rye, tall fescue, and Kentucky bluegrass.
