Lace Bugs
Symptoms: Silvery spots on upper surfaces of leaves; black spots on undersides of leaves.
Offender: Lace bugs are 1/8-1/4 inches long and common on rhododendrons, laurels, hawthorns and elms during the growing season.

One problem with Azaleas is the lace bug which sucks the sap out of the leaf resulting in a white speckling of the leaf. The underside of the leaf may be covered in the reddish-brown droppings of the insect.

In the vegetable garden, monitor for squash vine borer, flea beetle on eggplant, cucumber beetle. In the landscape, watch for bagworms, azalea lace bugs, leaf miners, camellia-tea scale, euonymus scale and aphids, of course.

Prune only to remove damaged or dead wood or to control plant size, preferably after the flowers fade in early summer.
Leaves that look bleached may have fallen victim to lace bugs, small sucking insects that can be found on leaf undersides.
