Lateral bud A bud borne in the axil of a previous season's leaf.

lateral meristem A region where cells divide, located along the length of a stem or root.
latex A thick, white, fluid secretion of many plant species.

Lateral bud A bud borne in the axil of a leaf or branch; not terminal. Latex Milky sap which exudes from cut surfaces of a few house plants, such as Ficus elastica decora and Euphorbia.

The potency of apical dominance not only varies from one species to another but is influenced by orientation: Lateral buds on horizontal branches are less restrained by the apical bud, while lateral buds on vertical growth are strongly suppressed.

Start your seasonal pruning by pinching off spent blossoms, leaving lateral buds to bloom. For fewer, larger, showier blooms, pinch off lateral buds before the main blossoms open to direct all the plant's energy to the remaining bud.

You should prune off about a third of the previous year's growth. The stem should be cut back to a lateral bud or branch that is facing in the direction you want the shrub to grow.
