If you don't mind having a mixed lawn, then using Rye grass lawn seed or Fescue lawn seed. I would fill in any dips in the lawn with some well drained soil mix first.

As the weather cools new lawn seeds will germinate and grow much easier - so if you have some dead patches, now's a good time to do repairs by raking first, pre-watering, seed sowing and a light sprinkling of soil over the top.

In spring, check that the soil surface is fairly dry before preparing a bed for lawn seed or turf. First trample the earth and break up clods with a rake, removing weeds or large stones as you go. Aim to achieve as level a site as possible.

Normally you will buy a lawn seed mix which has been formulated with different seed types for different needs and different climates.

Nail rakes are very common. They are useful for raking the soil after it has been dug. Their nail-like tines make grooves in the soil that can be used for sowing lawn seed.

(The store I buy it from does my soil testing - testing is always a good idea). When it comes to starter fertilizer, I need about 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet, and 5-7 pounds of lawn seed per 1,000 square feet.
