leaching
1. A deliberate process of using excess water to remove excess salts from the soil, ...

Leach and sewer fields use pipes buried in sandy or gravel soils to disperse the sludge and wastewater that builds up within a septic tank system.

To leach out soluble salts, remove and discard the white crust and some of the potting mix from the surface of the root ball. About one-half inch to two inches of potting mix can be taken off without harming the plant.

-- for too long will build up salt residue in the soil, and leaching can help reduce the toxic effects of this buildup.
On the other hand, compost that isn't used promptly can find most of its beneficial nutrients leached away by rainwater ...

Leaching
The washing out, usually by rain, of soluble (and some insoluble) minerals from the soil.

leach
When water washes away the essential nutrients from soil.
leaf mold ...

Leaching: Losing nutrients from top soil by water draining them out.
Leaf Bud Cutting: A cutting taken from a small piece of stem with one or two leaves or buds.
Leaf Cutting: A cutting taken from a whole or part of a leaf.

Leaching - The process whereby a substance, such as fertilizer, dissolves and is carried away by rain water.
Leggy Growth - New growth that is out of proportion to the rest of the plant.

Leaching: Loss of nutrients caused by the draining of water through the soil.
Leggy: Weak-stemmed, spindly plants caused by too much heat, shade, fertilizer or crowding.
Mites: Extremely small sucking insects which infest various plants.

Leaching - The removal of salts and soluble minerals from the soil by flushing the soil with water.

leaching
The removal or loss of excess salts or nutrients from soil. The soil around over fertilized plants can be leached clean by large quantities of fresh water used to 'wash' the soil.

Leaching-The movement of salts, nutrients, and other materials in water through the soil profile.
Leaching accounts for nutrient losses but can also be beneficial in ridding a soil of excess salts.

LEACHING -- A similar concept to making tea which leaches out the flavor of the tea leaves. This concept regards how water will rinse bad substances (like salt) or good ones (like nutrients) down deep into the soil or as runoff.

leaching requirement. The amount of water in excess of a crop's evapotranspiration requirement that is needed to maintain maximum yield by leaching harmful salts from the root zone.

LEACHING - A process which can rid soils of bad substances, like salts.
LEADER - The main growing shoot of a sapling, it eventually will become the trunk of the tree.

leaching Movement of water and soluble nutrients down through the soil profile.
leader A developing stem or trunk that is longer and more vigorous than laterals. See central leader.

Leach - dissolve or wash out soluble components of soil by heavy watering but can be beneficial to hydroponics systems to flush out excess fertilizer salts.
Leader - See Meristem ...

Leach
Dissolving, or moving, nutrients and minerals from the soil by running water through the soil.

This nutrient leaching is no small environmental problem. Every summer in the Gulf of Mexico, an area roughly the size of Connecticut is choked with vast algae and phytoplankton blooms, ...

Fairly easily leached, primarily on sandy soil. Fertilize according to soil test.

Avoid injury by leaching the soil thoroughly with water. Alternatives to salt such as sand, cinders or light gravel can be used. Kitty litter can also be used for traction.

The septic tank leach field is a tempting spot for a vegetable garden - it's large, flat, and usually sunny. However, it's generally not recommended to plant vegetables in this area, for several reasons. Read on to find out more.

Nitrogen quickly leaches out of unused compost. Mix in a nitrogen fertilizer when composting if your soil has low nitrogen levels. Never use unfinished compost that still has recognizable food waste in it, as it will attract pests to your garden.

Plants should be leached every four to six months. You should leach a plant before you fertilize so that you don't wash away all the fertilizer you just added. Leaching is done by pouring a lot of water on the soil and letting it drain completely.

Concrete and stone planters are durable, offer insulation from overheating and are porous, but the salts that leach from concrete and other stones - like limestone or marble - can alter soil chemistry.

This will allow the excess nitrogen to leach or dilute through the lawn and reducing the concentration in one area.

They also build up when there isn't enough moisture to leach away salts. This is one reason people turn to organic fertilizers in the belief that organic is safer than chemical. But there can be problems with this approach, too.

This can leach out of the soil and the leaves will turn yellow. The other possibility is mildew which can occur if there is too much humidity. Have you thought of mulching and hand watering at the roots only?

Be sure and leach the container plants about every 4 months or so. You can see the salt buildup on the outside of clay pots.

Leaching is the practice of applying irrigation water in excess of the water-holding capacity of the soil. This excess water must drain downward through the soil, and in so doing, it carries with it the excess soluble salts.

Leaching occurs if there are insufficient negatively charged surfaces. Because zeolite has a honeycomb structure and strong negative charges, it is able to attract and hold the positively charged cations for the future use of the plant.

Chemicals can leach out and injure plants. Use pressure-treated lumber, or rot-resistant cedar or redwood.
Composite landscape timbers. Some landscape timbers are made to look like weathered wood.

The EPA is phasing out the sale of CCA-treated wood over concerns about arsenic leaching from the wood into the soil. However, many structures built from pressure-treated wood remain in yards. What to do about the arsenic in the soil already?

And rain and irrigation water moves so rapidly through the porous, sandy soil found in most seaside gardens that salts are quickly leached away, unlike regions that are more arid or that have poorly drained soil, ...

In nature, a bog contains plants that are uniquely adapted to wet, acidic soils"acidic because little or no water flows through the bog and so no acids are leached away.

There is a lot of concern that the chemicals to keep wood from rotting so fast may leach into your soil and contaminate your soil and vegetables.

Even if your potting mix is perfect from the get-go, it will soon become depleted of nutrients as they are constantly used up by plants and leached out by watering. The faster a plant grows the more fertilizer and water it will require.

Topsoil holds moisture well, provides necessary nutrients and will prevent the leaching of fertilizers. When seeding, use a mix of Kentucky bluegrass, fescue and rye.

Avoid using creosote or pentachlorophenol treated lumber (such as railroad ties) for the frames, to prevent these chemicals from leaching into the soil and injuring your plants.

This trip is all inclusive and will be accompanied by Lisa Tesselaar and managed by Iris Leach.

Because the necessary frequent watering leaches nutrients from potting mix, container plants need regular feeding. Apply a liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks; or mix a controlled-release fertilizer into the potting mix before planting.

Caliches, or hardpan, are hardened calcium carbonate deposits that form when minerals are leached from the upper layer of soil. They then accumulate in the next layer, which is typically three to 10 feet below the surface.

Nutrients are readily leached from the soil due to frequent watering. These nutrients need to be replaced. This is especially critical when using a soilless mix.

Nitrogen can be lost in the soil by the leaching action of irrigation and rainfall. Legumes, such as clover, "fix" nitrogen into the soil, making them excellent additions to any garden.
Phosphorus ...

The coarse nature of sandy soils leads to the leaching of water and nutrients-hardly the best conditions for landscape plants.

(You should also avoid using the lumber around vegetable gardens.) Toxic compounds from the wood preservatives could leach into your compost. The compounds are harmful to humans and pets.

However, frequent watering can cause nutrients to leach from the garden soil.

They are easily leached out of the soil due to rain or irrigation. Overly heavy applications of commercial fertilizers can build up toxic concentrations of salts in the soil, thus creating chemical imbalances.

Even a great potting mix will become depleted over time, as plants take up the nutrients and the water leaches them out. The larger a plant grows, and the more water it takes, the faster the soil is depleted.

Lye- A strong alkaline solution of sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, or the leachate of wood ashes that is rich in potassium carbonate.
Maceration- The process of removing the fleshy tissue surrounding seeds, often by soaking in water.

-Garden beds should be rotated regularly so your plants are not leached of nutrients by the heavy feeding petunias. Window boxes, baskets, and other containers are all good temporary flower homes when giving your gardens a break.

Fertilize dill at least once during the growing season for best results. Dill is notorious for leaching soil nutrients. Keep your dill garden free of weeds as they easily encroach upon dill's territory.
Start Indoors ...

One limitation is that it quickly leaches through the soil, and must be applied frequently.

The fen prairie is a re-creation of an unusual wetland where the water contains a high degree of mineral salts leached from underground limestone.
These six re-creations are reminders of our past and serve as open classrooms of midwestern history.

This is because the soil nutrients are not being leached out by frequent watering.

This leaches soluble salts from the soil which would otherwise accumulate. It also ensures that the bottom roots are watered thoroughly. Excess water should be drained off.

Planting hydrangeas near a concrete foundation or sidewalk will often affect the color since the pH of the soil may be raised considerably by lime leaching out of these structures, making it difficult to obtain blue.
*NOTE TO COMMERCIAL GROWERS: ...

Some gravel media can even leach mineral substances into the solution, resulting in chemical imbalances. Nevertheless, media-based systems remain popular--especially among beginners--because of their relative simplicity and reliability.

A handful of loam holds its shape when squeezed, and crumbles when squeezed harder. If well-drained, it leaches nutrients and warms slowly. Add worm castings, rotted manure, and organic matter (compost and chopped leaves) to improve it.

They are heavy feeders and frequent watering will leach the nutrients down the drain hole. Therefore, fertilize regularily (10-14 days) with a 10-10-10. You can also add a time-release fertilizer to the soil as a suppplemental fertilizer.
