leaching
1. A deliberate process of using excess water to remove excess salts from the soil, ...

Leaching salts from potting mixes
To leach out soluble salts, remove and discard the white crust and some of the potting mix from the surface of the root ball.

-- for too long will build up salt residue in the soil, and leaching can help reduce the toxic effects of this buildup.
On the other hand, compost that isn't used promptly can find most of its beneficial nutrients leached away by rainwater ...

Leaching
The washing out, usually by rain, of soluble (and some insoluble) minerals from the soil.

Leaching: Losing nutrients from top soil by water draining them out.
Leaf Bud Cutting: A cutting taken from a small piece of stem with one or two leaves or buds.
Leaf Cutting: A cutting taken from a whole or part of a leaf.

Leaching - The process whereby a substance, such as fertilizer, dissolves and is carried away by rain water.
Leggy Growth - New growth that is out of proportion to the rest of the plant.

Leaching: Loss of nutrients caused by the draining of water through the soil.
Leggy: Weak-stemmed, spindly plants caused by too much heat, shade, fertilizer or crowding.
Mites: Extremely small sucking insects which infest various plants.

Leaching - The removal of salts and soluble minerals from the soil by flushing the soil with water.

leaching
The removal or loss of excess salts or nutrients from soil. The soil around over fertilized plants can be leached clean by large quantities of fresh water used to 'wash' the soil.

Leaching-The movement of salts, nutrients, and other materials in water through the soil profile.
Leaching accounts for nutrient losses but can also be beneficial in ridding a soil of excess salts.

LEACHING -- A similar concept to making tea which leaches out the flavor of the tea leaves. This concept regards how water will rinse bad substances (like salt) or good ones (like nutrients) down deep into the soil or as runoff.

leaching requirement. The amount of water in excess of a crop's evapotranspiration requirement that is needed to maintain maximum yield by leaching harmful salts from the root zone.

LEACHING - A process which can rid soils of bad substances, like salts.
LEADER - The main growing shoot of a sapling, it eventually will become the trunk of the tree.

leaching Movement of water and soluble nutrients down through the soil profile.
leader A developing stem or trunk that is longer and more vigorous than laterals. See central leader.

How to Do It Step 1 Clean the gourd by washing it in a disinfectant like Lysol or vinegar. This step may be left out if you'd like; the birds won't mind if their house doesn't look pretty.

This nutrient leaching is no small environmental problem. Every summer in the Gulf of Mexico, an area roughly the size of Connecticut is choked with vast algae and phytoplankton blooms, ...

Avoid injury by leaching the soil thoroughly with water. Alternatives to salt such as sand, cinders or light gravel can be used. Kitty litter can also be used for traction.

Fast release fertilizers are immediately available to plants, but are also subject to rapid depletion from the soil via leaching or volatilization.

Applying too early may result in reduced control or no control due to leaching and/or normal herbicide degradation.

Leaching is the practice of applying irrigation water in excess of the water-holding capacity of the soil. This excess water must drain downward through the soil, and in so doing, it carries with it the excess soluble salts.

by the use of this type of fertilizer are: long-lasting effectiveness due to slow release, a decreased likelihood of burning your lawn, relative easy of use, fewer applications needed per year, and the reduced chance of the fertilizer leaching ...

Deep watering will relieve heavy boron soil concentrations by leaching the nutrient away from the roots. In good soil, this leaching won't cause boron deficiency in plants.

Although leaching of arsenic into soil has been addressed, much outdoor lumber still contains copper and other chemical salts that are of concern in areas where small children play or vegetables are grown.

The EPA is phasing out the sale of CCA-treated wood over concerns about arsenic leaching from the wood into the soil. However, many structures built from pressure-treated wood remain in yards. What to do about the arsenic in the soil already?

Topsoil holds moisture well, provides necessary nutrients and will prevent the leaching of fertilizers. When seeding, use a mix of Kentucky bluegrass, fescue and rye.

Avoid using creosote or pentachlorophenol treated lumber (such as railroad ties) for the frames, to prevent these chemicals from leaching into the soil and injuring your plants.

Nitrogen can be lost in the soil by the leaching action of irrigation and rainfall. Legumes, such as clover, "fix" nitrogen into the soil, making them excellent additions to any garden.
Phosphorus ...

The coarse nature of sandy soils leads to the leaching of water and nutrients-hardly the best conditions for landscape plants.

They can store toxic chemicals in their leaves that are released when the leaves fall off, leaching through the soil to be taken up by other plants.

Fertilize dill at least once during the growing season for best results. Dill is notorious for leaching soil nutrients. Keep your dill garden free of weeds as they easily encroach upon dill's territory.
Start Indoors ...

Leaching occurs if there are insufficient negatively charged surfaces. Because zeolite has a honeycomb structure and strong negative charges, it is able to attract and hold the positively charged cations for the future use of the plant.

Planting hydrangeas near a concrete foundation or sidewalk will often affect the color since the pH of the soil may be raised considerably by lime leaching out of these structures, making it difficult to obtain blue.
*NOTE TO COMMERCIAL GROWERS: ...

A half whiskey barrel makes a great water gardening container. Before planting in the barrel, it's a good idea to install a flexible pond liner. This prevents toxins from leaching out of the wood into the water and harming your plants or fish.

" The size of pores in between soil particles plays a critical role in the health of the plants growing in the soil; more porous soil drains water more quickly and thus is more susceptible to lose nutrients to leaching and drainage.

Typical Florida soils allow rapid, downward movement of water and nutrients. Thus, they dry out quickly and are not compatible with plants having high water and nutritional needs. Sandy soils allow leaching of chemicals into groundwater and ...

soil found in most seaside gardens that salts are quickly leached away, unlike regions that are more arid or that have poorly drained soil, where salts can accumulate in the soil. You can do your part to help the situation. Even without the leaching ...

Organic fertilizers provide significant environmental benefits: They break down slowly and tend to remain in the soil instead of leaching or washing into local water sources; they also support earthworms and beneficial microbes.

mineral, although it does not affect the nutrient quality or the pH of the mix. It does add in drainage and in air and water retention, that magical balance. In fact, it is sometimes used in outdoor gardens to prevent sandy soil from leaching ...

This will tell you if you soil drains too quickly, leaching nutrients and causing plants to be watered more frequently. Water well a small portion of your garden. Two days later, dig a hole 6 inches deep.

The faster a plant grows the more fertilizer and water it will require. Consequently, as watering is increased so is leaching and nutrient loss. Visit the Royal Horticultural Society for advice on identifying nutrient deficiencies.
