Leaf cuttings can be struck during any season of the year, but the winter months when the plant is less inclined to bloom seemed to work the best for me.

 


TOTALLY PRACTICAL: African Violet Leaf Cuttings
As well as being relatively easy to grow, African Violet (Saintpaulia ionantha), is also easy to propagate.

Leaf Cutting Bees
This affects mainly roses but can occur to other shrubs too. Circular holes are cut into the edges of leaves which are used to build nests.

Leaf Cutting:
Do this in early summer on deciduous trees that donot flower or fruit. Use sharp scissors to remove half of each leaf 1 on weak branches or trees, but all but the stalk 2 on strong wood.

Leaf Cuttings: A way to propagate new plants without using seeds. A method often used for African Violets and begonias in which instead of rooting an herbacious stem cutting, new plants are started from just one leaf.

LEAF CUTTING - A method of propagation. A leaf is removed and is placed in vermiculite or perlite for future baby plants.

Leaf cuttings may be taken at any time of the year if the African violets are grown under lights. If you're relying on natural lighting, you'll get fastest results during the spring and summer.

Leaf Cuttings
Leaf cuttings are used almost exclusively for a few indoor plants. Leaves of most plants will either produce a few roots but no plant, or just decay.

Rooting leaf cuttings in soil mix. Use a container with drainage holes. Scrub in hot, soapy water and rinse in clear water.

Another type of leaf cutting is made by cutting the leaf in half along the center of the midrib.

Dip the cut edge in rooting hormone and insert it into a tray of moist seedling mix.

Before you take a leaf cutting, fill a new pot with a light, well-draining potting soil.

It's also easy to start new plants from leaf cuttings. Cut off a healthy leaf , along with an inch or so of leaf stem. Insert the leaf stem in potting mix or in a glass of water.

Be sure your Vft has been propagated vegetatively from clump division, leaf cuttings, tissue culture or started from seed and not removed from the wild as this species is threatened by extinction.

Propagation: Offsets and leaf cuttings are easiest. Starting from seed is possible but difficult work for the beginner.

To propagate new plants from cuttings, place a 2- to 3-inch leaf cutting with a few leaf buds in vermiculite, perlite or a glass of water. Place the cutting in a warm place.

African violets are a favorite flowering house plant. They are easily propagated from a leaf cutting, they bloom continually all year, and they are available in many flower colors and forms.

Root cuttings need reasonable compost, a moderate but steady temperature, space and a little patience. But, unlike stem or leaf cuttings, root cuttings develop underground so you can't see what's going on.
