Leaflet: A sub-division of a compound leaf.
Leggy: Weak, tall growth on a plant, sometimes caused by keeping a plant in too warm conditions too long.
Legume: Dehiscent fruit that splits into two when mature.

LEAFLET - A leaf-like section of a compound leaf. Small in stature.

-- but has leaflets arranged on at least two different planes. This gives the leaf a full, 3-dimensional 'plume' look rather than one of a flat feather. The most common example of a plumose palm is a Queen palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana).

The parts we call leaflets on other plants are identified as pinna.

The portion of the frond that contains the pinna is known as the blade.

Palmate - the leaflets are attached directly to the end of the petiole and extend outward much like fingers in a palm. Examples are Schefflera actinophylla (Australian umbrella tree) and Parthenocissus quinquefolia (Virginia creeper).

The delicate, fan-shaped leaflets of maidenhair ferns, Adiantum, are pale green and shimmer above shiny black stems.

Agarita doesn't have thorns, but the three spiny leaflets on each leaf serve the purpose. Native to a large area of central and south Texas and into Mexico, this gray-leafed shrub makes a great hedge.

Five-leaf akebia (Akebia quinaia) has leaf clusters with 5 leaflets, each one rounded, light green, and 2 in (5.1 cm) long. A trifoliata is similar, but the leaflets are in clusters of 3 and can reach 4 in (10.2 cm) long.

Remove all but the top 2 leaflets on the branch, cutting just above the top set of leaves. You need to remove the excess leaves for the same reason we removed the flower in Step #2. They're taking up too much of the plant's energy.

The mites' piercing-sucking mouth parts cause curling of leaflets from outside inward by creating small depressions in young leaves. Damaged flower buds sometimes will not open or open only to be distorted.

Instead of the small rounded leaves, these plants have triangular leaflets in bright green or bold reddish purple. The flower color will vary from white to pink.

Native to western and southern Europe, this winter-blooming plant has deeply cut, evergreen foliage with four to nine narrow, dark leaflets.

The palmate leaves alternate along the stem and are divided into five equal-sized leaflets. Leaflets emerge with a purplish color and become green as they mature. The unusual flowers are about 1 inch across and appear in late March to early April.

A compound leaf features smaller leaflets branching out from the stem. The maple, for instance, is a single leaf.

Foliage consists of small leaflets on pinnately compound leaves, and is bright green in color. Good fall color, ranging from yellow to red.
Flowers are showy, yellow, and pea-like. It is in flower from June to September.

When the fruit's done, June-bearers start mass-producing runners, pairs of leaflets on very long stems which root to create new plants. If you want more plants to replace older ones, you can let some of them grow.

PINNATE LEAF: A series of leaflets arranged on either side of a central stalk.
PIONEER PLANTS: The very first species to grow of the soil has had a traumatic occurrence, like a fire, flood or earthquake.

Tender leaflets can be used in salads. Most peas are climbing plants, but there are also dwarf bush varieties available. Dwarf peas do not need a trellis to grow, but they do need some form of support.

As dead blossoms are removed, the resulting cuts should be made one-quarter inch above a five leaflet leaf, leaving at least two mature leaves on the stem. From September on, don't deadhead modern hybrid roses.

When cutting stems, cut just above the leaflets to encourage new growth. Cut on a slant.

Remove spent flowers. To encourage repeat flowering, use hand pruners or scissors to remove flowers as soon as they finish blooming. Cut each flower stem back to a leaf with 5 to 7 leaflets and a healthy bud.
