Avoid leggy plants and those that are single-stemmed. Compact, multiple stems will promote well-branched plants with more colorful blossoms.

My impatiens seem "leggy"

Last year my impatiens were very disappointing. I did not get near as many flowers as I have in the past and they seemed "leggy". The leaves grew well and they didn't look sick though.

Pinching may also be necessary to prevent leggy growth. Any time that the tip growth is removed, the plant's energy will be diverted to the lateral side growth, creating a much bushier plant.

Anything too high in nitrogen will enourage a lot of leggy, tender growth, just the kind of foliage aphids are most attracted to.

The only other care tip to keep in mind is that if you have the taller African marigolds, they may need to be staked in mid or late summer as they get tall and leggy, to keep them from breaking, drooping or falling over.
