Determining the right lighting level for houseplants is not an exact science. Other factors, like temperature, humidity, duration of sunlight and the temperament of the plant itself will all make a difference.

Their multilevel garden is now a beautiful place to hang out. The top tier is the patio next to the house, next is a lawn and additional patio, and at the lowest level, a garden area with wildlife-friendly native plants.

Most plants prefer a slightly acidic soil pH of 6.0 to 6.5.

The level of salts that will cause injury varies with the type of plant and how it is being grown. A plant grown in the home may be injured by salts at concentrations of 200 ppm.

Your level of toleration for such imperfections will determine whether to treat the problem or to leave it alone. Treatment does not always mean spraying. It also doesn't mean you must eradicate the pest; often reducing it is sufficient.

HIGH-LEVEL TOOLS
Modern tools make it easier than ever to make proper pruning cuts.

Salt levels are likely to be high no matter what the pH is, so plan to use plants that are somewhat salt tolerant in a leach field landscape.

In contrast, high levels of nutrients can also reduce plant growth, and if toxic levels are reached cause plant death. High levels of one element can also result in a corresponding shortage of another nutrient.

There's a certain level of reverse snobbery around the term, as it implies that those who don't have permanently ingrained dirt and callouses are not real gardeners - which may or may not be true.
