Light soil
Light soils are sandy or silty, with very little clay. They are generally easy to work, warm up quickly in spring, dry out rapidly and benefit from added organic material to help keep them moist and fertile.

Light Soil
The opposite of "heavy soil," the imprecise term "light soil" refers to soil composed of relatively large particles loosely packed together. The term is often synonymous with "sandy soil."

Upon light soils the case is very different. These flourish under the grass husbandry; and bare summer fallow is rarely required, because they may be cleaned and cropped in the same year with that valuable esculent, turnip.

Aspen need an acid, light soil, made up of humus, which is created in part by decaying leaves and other debris of the forest. The heavy, alkaline clays, prevalent throughout the Front Range, just won't cut it.

2m wide in heavy or light soils. It displays bright golden candle flowers from mid-autumn to spring. Banksia marginata 'Mini Marg', from the northeast coast of Tasmania, is only about 30cm high and 1m across.

In deep, light soil 'Healthmaster' (110 days) is a big, bulky root that stretches to 25 centimetres; excellent raw, cooked or juiced, it has 30 per cent more beta carotene, a powerful antioxidant, than other varieties.

Commonly, soils with lots of sand are referred to as light soils and soils with lots of clay are known as heavy soils. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

Heavy clay soils are much more likely to be overwatered than light soils. Conversely, light sandy soils are drought susceptible and tend not to be watered enough.

This is very easy to grow but does especially well in light soil in a sunny position. Dig the patch as early as possible before planting the tubers in February or March.

Potatoes prefer a sunny location and grow best in light soil amended with compost and fertilizer that doesn't contain a lot of nitrogen (which can cause root rot).

This plant likes warm, dry, well-drained, light soils. Do not overwater as tarragon is susceptible to root rot in soggy soil. Indoors, tarragon requires 5 hours of direct sunlight a day.

If you have a very light soil, you might want to incorporate organic matter like peat moss, leaf mold or compost to help it retain water. If your soil is very clayey, improve it with a generous addition of compost.

There are many different soil classifications, including well-drained, sandy, clay, acidic, light and heavy. For example, a light soil has a lower clay content than a heavy soil. Light soils tend to drain better and become drier faster.

Carrots require a light soil. Add very well processed compost to your soil and dig it in deep. Add bone meal to loosen soil. Check the soil for consistency in texture. Un-decomposed matter or rocks will alter the shape of your carrots.

In forests and woodlands, the plants' roots adapt to light soil, which is rich in leaf mold and decayed vegetable matter. You can easily feed your ferns compost materials by placing old, rotten vegetable and fruits or their matter.

They prefer rich, light soils, and are not fond of clay. They also do not like dry conditions. Their rapid growth demands that they are watered during dry periods. Add a general purpose fertilizer before planting if the soil is poor.

The plants prefer full sun to partial shade. They prefer moist, and light soils. Sandy and coarse soils are fine.
Seeds can be sown directly into the garden in the spring. They can also be started indoors, for transplanting later.

tolerates droughty soil
requires well-drained soil
Requires well-drained, light soil and grows best in an alkaline soil with a pH of 6.4 to 8.2. Once established, the plants are drought-tolerant. Foliage yellows in poorly dained soil.

4. Give each seedling its own small pot, filled to within 1/2 inch of top with light soil. Firm the soil around the base of each stem, making sure not to bury the leaves.Water immediately. Move plants steadily into brighter light.

Lots of preparation, patience and understanding are needed to grow aspen in the urban landscape. Aspen prefer light soils that are acidic and drain well, but these conditions are rarely found in urban areas.

Although it's possible to sprout a pineapple in water, most people have better luck rooting them in soil. Use a light soil mix with perlite and sand. Place the pineapple top in the soil up to the base of its leaves.

Sow the seed very shallowly (about 1/10' deep) in the garden bed and cover with a light soil/seed starting mix. Don't let the soil dry out during the 3 week germination period, or the seed won't grow.

Start it from seed, root cuttings, or by root division. It prefers light soil but will grow in heavy clay if it is amended with compost. Give each plant two feet all around. Trim during the growing season to keep it bushy. Hardy in Zones 4 to 9.

Get some fine mosquito netting and drape lightly over your plants and secure the bottom all around with some light soil. Helps keep insects from your pests. Cheesecloth works also.

Check any plants not yet established and water them well in dry weather, especially if you garden on light soil. Most perennials need at least one growing season to become established.

Gloxinias require bright light but not direct sun, and should be grown in a humid area at 60°-75°. Plant tuber, hollow side up, in rich, light soil. Water sparingly until first leaves begin to grow, then gradually increase. Blooms for 3-4 months ...

The proper planting depth for bulbs is usually between 3-5 times the height of the bulb. Plant deeper in light soil than in heavy soil.

One of my personal favourite plants is the Hosta and it too is a survivor. You can grow them in full hot sun or deep shade. You can grow them in light soils (sand is pushing the envelope) or clay soils and you'll still get a great show of leaves.

Propagation
Spring is a great time to take cuttings and make new plants. Cuttings can root in light soil, peat, perlite or water (depending on the plant).

Exposure: Sun or light shade
Soil: light soil
Hardiness: varies, see below
Bloom Time: Spring
Uses: under shrubs, at the edge of woodland areas, and in rock gardens and mixed borders.

Plant your first crop of beans a week or two after the date of the last expected frost. Sow the seeds 1 inch deep in heavy soil and 1½ inches deep in light soil. Firm the earth over them to ensure soil contact.

small quantities of clay can be worked into light sandy or silt soils to improve water retention and fertility (marling)
coconut fibre also helps in water retention on light soils
on clay, add lime or mushroom compost ...

As the compost breaks down, nutrients are released into the soil, also creating a food source for your plants. So this simple process dramatically improves light soil in two very important ways, providing a long term remedy to these problems.

lawn that may lead to water or temperature stress problems. Birches have a very shallow root system, so keep your trees healthy by fertilizing in spring and fall. Water regularly during drought periods, or if your Birch tree is planted in light soil.

A heavy, powerful tiller is most effective on stony, clay soils, while in a small garden or one with light soil, a smaller tiller is more appropriate. Very lightweight tillers, known as soil blenders, are designed mainly for raised-bed gardening.
