Liner (pond)
A flexible, waterproof sheet laid to stop the pond water from soaking into the surrounding soil. It can be made from butyl rubber, which is long-lasting but expensive, or cheaper, less durable PVC or polythene.

Open the liner and let it warm in the sun 30 minutes prior to installing to make it more flexible. Center it over the top of the excavation and secure corners with bricks or stones. Slowly begin filling with water.

Lay the pond liner inside the pond with about 3 feet over the sides. Smooth the liner as well as you can to remove all wrinkles. It will be necessary to make folds along the sides so the liner will fit snugly in the hole.

Line your project with pond liner or, for a budget liner, 4 to 8 layers of 4 mil black plastic. To hold the liner in place while filling with water, weigh down the edges with large stones or bricks.
