Lichens, liverworts and mosses help to create and stabilise soil often in the most inhospitable of places, and also play an important part in plant succession by containing the soil and moisture necessary for other plants to germinate.

Also known as liverwort or liverleaf, Hepatica produces long-lasting, daisy-like flowers of white, pale pink, or lavender that appear in early spring. This perennial prefers moist growing conditions.

Algae, mosses and liverworts do not directly attack the prothalli or sporelings but can impede their development by crowding and shading them. Green ooze, grayish thatch or stringy green strands are probably algae.

In Bryophytes, the gametophyte is the vegetative part of mosses and liverworths and the dominant phase of their life cycle, and work as hosters for the reduced sporophytes.

The only book I have found on the subject is George Schenk's wonderful book, Moss Gardening: including Lichens, Liverworts and Other Miniatures.

ideal for raising herbs, but most of the quicker germinating kinds ultimately make
better plants if they start life in peat-based soil-less compost.
