Main shoot
A basal cane or a strong lateral cane.
Mature plan
A plant that is old enough to produce blooms and seeds.

To promote 'trophy size' flowers, allow only one or two main shoots to develop. Remove all side buds as they begin to develop.

Simply cut off a side shoot or the top of the main shoot just below a growth node. Make sure that there are at least two growth nodes above the cut. Remove any of the lower leaves near the base of the new plant.

To prune determinate tomato plants to a single stem, remove the suckers (small shoots) that appear in the leaf axils of the main shoot.

HEEL -- A strip of bark and wood remaining at the base of a side shoot cutting pulled off a main shoot. Some cuttings root more readily if a heel is attached.
HERB -- A plant grown for flavoring or medicinal purposes.

Definition as written by talinum:

Select four or five main shoots and tie them to the canes.

Train new shoots onto a stake or wire to encourage the straight growth of the vine. Gently clip off other shoots to strengthen the main shoot.

Side shoots which develop on the stem are carefully removed shortly after they appear so that all growing energy can be concentrated on the main shoot.
